UNIFI Communications, the Syrian Telecommunications Establishment (STE) and the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CYTA) have partnered to build UGARIT 2, a 240-kilometre submarine cable linking Pentaskhinos in Cyprus with Tartous on Syria’s Mediterranean coast.
The project is aimed at improving Syria’s international connectivity and helping rebuild its digital infrastructure.
It is also being described as the first major international infrastructure agreement to be signed under Syria’s new economic framework.
As part of the deal, UGARIT 2 will have 24 fibre pairs and an initial capacity of 31 Tbps, which can eventually be expanded to as much as 370 Tbps.
The new cable will replace the original UGARIT system, which has provided Syria with international connectivity since 1995.
Syria Minister of Communications and IT, H.E. Abdulsalam Haykal, said: “Syria is building a digital hub at the crossroads of three continents. UGARIT 2, alongside our SilkLink initiative, establishes Syria as a connectivity gateway between Europe, the Gulf, and Asia.
UNIFI Communications founder and CEO, Adrian Shatku, added: “UGARIT 2 is proof that USA technology, European partnership, and Syrian determination can together deliver critical infrastructure in the most complex environments – a Terabit-class system transforming Syria from an endpoint into a digital crossroads.”
Cyta CEO, George Metzakis, concluded: “Strategic investment in regional and international network infrastructure is fundamental to enabling secure, resilient, high-capacity connectivity for the Eastern Mediterranean region.”
