Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraqi Oil Minister Basim Khudair inaugurated on Friday a new central gas processing plant at the Faihaa oil field in the southern province of Basra.

The initiative is an important stage in Iraq’s overall effort to prevent gas flaring, achieve gas self-sufficiency, and provide fuel for power plants to support the country’s electricity grid.

The facility has a daily processing capacity of 130 million standard cubic feet and is expected to raise Iraqi gas output by 92 million standard cubic feet per day.

The new gas processing plant will produce 9,800 barrels of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) per day (approximately 840 tons).

The project aims to capture associated gas that was previously wasted through flaring. It will convert this byproduct into clean energy to alleviate local power shortages.

Located about 20 kilometers north of Basra near the Iranian border, the Faihaa oil field is operated by Kuwait Energy Basra, a division of Hong Kong-listed United Energy Group.

Iraq seeks to significantly reduce its dependency on imported gas, with the ultimate objective of completely eliminating gas flaring nationally by 2029.
