US President Donald Trump has described the Strait of Hormuz as “new US territory” in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, alongside an image of a map of the strategic waterway.
Trump said on Sunday, August 23, that the Strait of Hormuz is open and operational and that sea mines along the route have either been removed or detonated.
He also said that no talks or negotiations are currently taking place between Washington and Tehran.
The US president’s remarks come as the Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important oil transit routes, and disagreements over the status of the waterway have become a major source of tension between the United States and Iran.
