An hours-long standoff on Saturday between Mt. Juliet Police and a barricaded subject on Saturday ended after officials say the individual took his own life.
It began around 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 22 when police responded to the 600 block of Meadowview Drive for an isolated altercation. According to police, during the altercation, an adult male fired a handgun in the presence of two women.
Although the two women safely exited the residence before MJPD arrived, the man remained inside, beginning the standoff. Police secured the area and alerted neighbors, but said the incident was confined to the residence.
Crisis intervention and mental health resources were called to the residence and worked throughout the nighttime hours to establish communication and bring the encounter to a peaceful resolution.
During that time, officers obtained felony warrants for reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon related to the original altercation and firearm discharge. However, police said around 4 a.m. on Sunday, officers outside of the residence heard a single gunshot from inside.
When officers entered and searched the residence, they located the man dead from what MJPD said is an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone impacted by this event, especially the family and loved ones of those involved,” MJPD said in a press release.
