President Donald Trump said Tuesday that U.S. forces are carrying out “large and powerful” strikes on Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for Tehran’s attempt to deploy mines in the waterway and missile attacks on a U.S. base in Jordan.
“The United States is, as we speak, striking Iranian Targets near the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Trump said the strikes were launched in response to Iran’s failed attempt to place sea mines in the strategic waterway and its firing of eight missiles at a U.S. military base in Jordan. He said all eight missiles were intercepted.
The president also warned Tehran against responding to the latest U.S. attack.
“If the failed Nation of Iran retaliates for this very justified attack, they will be hit again at a much harder and higher level,” Trump wrote, adding that an even larger attack is “waiting in the wings.”
U.S. Central Command said Tuesday that American forces had resumed strikes on Iran after roughly a month without U.S. military action against the country.
CENTCOM said the strikes followed “recent attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and against American service members deployed to the region.”
Iranian state television reported explosions in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas but provided no immediate details.
The renewed U.S. strikes come after Iranian forces attempted to place mines in the Strait of Hormuz and launched missiles at U.S. military targets in Jordan. Jordan’s military said it intercepted eight missiles that entered the country’s airspace.
