Baghdad, Iraq – The Iraqi Ministry of Interior announced on Tuesday that its security forces had successfully dismantled 250 drug smuggling and trafficking networks across the country—including 34 networks with international reach and operations—over the past 100 days. This announcement was made during a press conference held by Major General Miqdad Miri, Head of the Ministry’s Relations and Media Department, to review key activities and official government security statistics. Major General Miri stated that the exceptional efforts of anti-narcotics teams during this period resulted in the seizure of approximately 785 kilograms of various narcotic substances. Additionally, 177,000 narcotic pills were confiscated, and 144 foreign nationals involved in organized crime networks were arrested.
In the same context, the security official highlighted the judicial authorities’ firm approach to this serious issue; the Iraqi judiciary handed down 2,157 rulings against individuals involved in drug-related offenses, resulting in the conviction of 952 local traffickers and 220 defendants accused of international trafficking. Furthermore, these severe penalties included 59 death sentences and 254 life imprisonment sentences, alongside the issuance of 18 international arrest warrants (Red Notices). Additionally, 18 arrest warrants were executed against key wanted individuals within Iraqi territory.

Regarding community and internal security, Major General Miqdad Miri emphasized that the Ministry of Interior has achieved a significant breakthrough in increasing the rate of solving complex, previously unsolved crimes. This progress coincides with a marked decline in rates of serious criminal offenses, such as murder, kidnapping, and rape. Furthermore, there has been a notable improvement in the speed and execution rate of outstanding judicial arrest warrants against wanted individuals across various governorates.

In a move bolstering social stability, the issue of tribal conflicts has seen significant improvement, marked by a 30% decline over the past 100 days in the phenomenon locally known as “tribal *dakkat*” (acts of intimidation involving warning shots or attacks on homes). Major General Miri announced that ten Iraqi governorates are now completely free of this phenomenon, recording “zero *dakkat*.” Concurrently, there has been a sharp drop—reaching 71%—in armed tribal conflicts overall. These results were achieved through intensive security deployments, the efforts of tribal reconciliation committees, and the enforcement of the rule of law.
