For half a century, the strategic compact underpinning American and Israeli security policy has rested on a single, seemingly inviolable premise: the Qualitative Military Edge. The doctrine was simple—superior sensors, layered interceptors, and the logistical weight of the United States would render Iran’s arsenal strategically irrelevant. That premise is now obsolete.
The past months have exposed a reality that Tehran has long been calculating. Drawing on open-source intelligence, satellite telemetry, and verified strike analysis, a picture emerges that challenges the very foundations of Western deterrence. What we are witnessing is not a failure of engineering, but the brutal mathematics of saturation—a reality that no air defence network, however sophisticated, can ultimately escape.
The opening act of any conflict is deceptive. In the initial exchanges, advanced systems like Arrow and David’s Sling perform precisely as advertised. According to recent OSINT-based evaluations, interception rates in the first wave of a major salvo can exceed 97 per cent. To the casual observer, the shield holds.
But conflict is not a single moment. It is a continuum. By the eighth wave of sustained, complex strikes, that same data shows the defence penetration rate soaring from just 2.5 per cent to over 57 per cent. This is not a bug in the technology; it is a surrender to physics. Interceptor inventories are finite. Radar arrays, no matter how advanced, become saturated. The system that appears invincible in a single engagement begins to crack under the weight of persistence.
The implication is stark: over-reliance on stated interception rates risks a catastrophic failure of imagination. What looks like deterrence on paper becomes a trap when the conflict outlasts the ammunition.

A closure of Hormuz—through which roughly 20 per cent of global oil flows—would not merely be a military act. It would be an immediate shock to global energy markets, weaponising Western economic stability against the US-Israel axis. Tehran does not need to sustain such a closure indefinitely; the credible threat alone is enough to destabilise.
Simultaneously, the Houthi campaign in the Red Sea has created a second theatre of radical asymmetry. Western navies find themselves deploying billion-dollar destroyers to intercept drones and anti-ship missiles that cost a fraction of that sum. The same cost-exchange inversion that cripples air defence is now stretching allied naval assets thin, disrupting global supply chains, and complicating the logistical resupply routes that Israeli interceptor stocks depend upon.
Western policymakers continue to search for a “short, sharp” exchange—a controlled escalation that allows defences to reset and deterrence to reassert itself. For Tehran, that off-ramp would be a strategic error. A limited retaliation favours the defender’s technology. A sustained, multi-domain campaign favours the attacker’s geography, industrial depth, and proxy network.
The joint American-Israeli operational posture was built on the assumption that the shield would hold indefinitely. That assumption belongs to a pre-saturation era.
