According to Euronews, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni finished a two-day visit to the Persian Gulf, which included stops in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. This followed an earlier visit to Saudi Arabia for talks on regional security and energy supplies, which have been disrupted by restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

In Doha, Meloni met with Qatar’s Emir. Their discussions centered on diplomatic initiatives to conclude the ongoing Middle East conflict. Italy has recently experienced reduced gas deliveries due to damage in Qatar from Iranian strikes. The Prime Minister indicated Italy’s willingness to assist in repairing the local energy infrastructure and called for prompt collaborative action to guarantee safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Conversations also covered potential shared investments in defense, security, critical infrastructure, and Mediterranean migration management.

The final destination was the United Arab Emirates, where Meloni conveyed Italy’s solidarity with the nation, which she described as facing persistent Iranian attacks. She also thanked the UAE for its help in repatriating Italian tourists and citizens at the onset of the hostilities. The agenda with UAE leadership mirrored the topics addressed in Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

During the earlier meeting in Saudi Arabia, discussions with the Crown Prince covered Italian military support for defense and the potential for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict involving Iran. Talks also addressed methods to protect energy supplies and lessen the crisis’s effects on populations and economies.

This trip marked the first by a leader from the European Union, G20, or NATO to the region since the war began. The visit was planned discreetly for security reasons due to ongoing Iranian bombardments in the area. Within Italy, the mission drew criticism from some political factions, while another political figure characterized it as a shrewd decision, albeit acknowledging challenging times ahead.
