The United Nations Security Council failed Tuesday to adopt a resolution meant to help ensure naval security in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital international waterway whose effective closure has been disrupting the global economy ever since Israel and the United States launched a war with Iran.

Despite support from the U.S. and several Gulf states, the draft resolution was blocked by China and the Russian Federation — two permanent members who claimed the text was one-sided and whitewashed the crimes Israel and the U.S. have committed in Iran.

“The draft resolution failed to capture the root causes and the full picture of the conflict in a comprehensive and balanced manner,” Chinese Ambassador Fu Cong said.

Colombia and Pakistan — the latter of whom has been helping mediate an end to the war — both voted to abstain.

Iran’s near-total closing of the strait in response to the war has led to a significant decline in shipping traffic, threatening the world’s food and energy supply chains. President Donald Trump has threatened to commit war crimes if Iran does not reopen it.
