Spain will reopen its embassy in Tehran in a move aimed at supporting diplomatic efforts and helping to maintain a ceasefire, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares has said.

The embassy had been closed following the outbreak of the war in March, which Spain has criticised since its beginning, News.Az reports, citing Fars news agency.

Albares said he has instructed Spain’s ambassador to return to the Iranian capital and resume operations at the embassy.

He added that Madrid intends to contribute to diplomatic efforts “from all possible angles”, including directly from Tehran, to help sustain the ceasefire.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has described the war against Iran as “illegal”. Since the start of the conflict, Spain has also closed its airspace to US military aircraft.
