COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — A memorial took place Friday for a central Ohio airman who was killed during a refueling crash in Iraq.

Master Sgt. Tyler Simmons was one of six servicemembers who died last month in a KC-135 crash. Three of the six, including Simmons, were from Ohio.

Those who knew Simmons from church and Eastmoor High School said they watched him grow from a smiling kid to a young man who was proud to serve his country. They said the loss is especially devastating for his parents who are now preparing to bury their only child.

Loved ones described Simmons as someone who was always smiling, known for his dimples and kindness. As the community mourns, some said they’re struggling to make sense of what’s happening overseas and how Simmons life was cut short. They said they’re pleading for the conflict to end.

Rickenbacker Military Families has set up memorial funds for the families of Simmons and the other airmen killed in the crash. For more information and to make a donation, click here.
