The White House prioritizes reopening the Strait of Hormuz, but a full return to normal conditions may require more than a diplomatic agreement with Iran, according to a report published by The Maritime Executive on April 22, 2026.

The Pentagon‘s internal assessment estimates that clearing mines from the strait could take six months after hostilities end, even with advanced minesweeping and minehunting equipment aboard three Independence-class littoral combat ships currently deployed in the region. The assessment, reported by the Washington Post‘s Dan Lamothe, suggests the timeline would extend the conflict’s energy-price effects into the period of the midterm elections, an outcome unwelcome to the administration.

The House Armed Services Committee received a briefing on the status of the Strait of Hormuz shutdown on Tuesday, based on accounts from three officials. During that briefing, a senior Pentagon official told lawmakers that removing all mines could require half a year—far longer than any previous official estimate. According to the Post, the administration has not directly denied that estimate.

The six-month timeline is based on an estimated 20 mines currently believed to be in the strait. However, the number requiring clearance depends on how the conflict evolves. Iran retains access to military and civilian small craft and can emplace additional mines if it chooses. The size of Iran’s surviving mine stockpile is not publicly known, but before the war it numbered in the thousands, indicating the difficulty could increase if Iran acts.

The exact location of the mines is not definitively known, but Iran has published a danger-zone chart warning shipping to avoid the traffic separation scheme in the center of the strait. Many ships have transited through Omani waters at the southern edge of that designated zone without incident. On the opposite side, dozens of vessels have passed through Iran’s territorial waters near the islands of Larak, Qeshm, and Hormuz. No mine strikes have been reported to date.
