The Maritime Executive reported on April 23, 2026, that tensions in the Strait of Hormuz remain elevated as both sides continue to exchange threats. Iran has reiterated its claim that the Strait is closed, while the current President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated that the U.S. Navy is working to clear the vital waterway. This dispute has become a major obstacle, moving the parties further from potential negotiations.

In a social media post on Thursday, President Trump ordered the U.S. Navy to shoot and kill any boats, including small vessels, that are placing mines in the waters of the Strait. He has alternated between declaring the Strait open and suggesting Iran does not want it closed due to lost revenue, while vowing to continue the blockade until a peace deal is achieved. Trump added that mine sweepers are currently clearing the Strait and that he has ordered that activity to continue at a tripled level. This came after a Washington Post report indicated the Pentagon’s internal assessment is that minesweeping operations could take six months after hostilities cease.

Iranian officials have taunted Trump in their statements while asserting their control over the Strait. The semi-official Tasnim News Agency quoted officials as saying Iran has not received its first payments for safe passage through the Strait. Iran’s parliament speaker and negotiator, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, stated that the U.S. did not achieve its goals through military aggression and will not achieve them by bullying. Iran has called the blockade a flagrant breach of the ceasefire, demanding it be lifted before peace talks resume. Iran also vowed retaliation as the U.S. has begun intercepting ships, including a containership disabled on Sunday and two tankers boarded in the Indian Ocean. CENTCOM reported that over 30 ships have been redirected during the blockade.

As part of its propaganda campaign, the IRGC released a staged video showing the seizure of one of the MSC containerships that occurred on Wednesday in the Strait. The IRGC asserted that the ships lacked transit approvals and had tampered with navigation devices, likely referring to both ships crossing with AIS transmissions turned off. Reports confirmed that both ships have been taken toward the port of Bandar Abbas. Montenegro’s Minister of Maritime Affairs, Filip Radulovic, said the ships were believed to be anchored approximately nine nautical miles from the Iranian coast.

Montenegro reported that the master and chief engineer of the MSC Francesca are its citizens, along with two other crewmembers, all reported safe. Montenegro noted that MSC was in negotiations with the Iranian side. The Philippines Department of Migrant Workers reported 15 Filipinos on the two ships: ten on the Epaminondas and five on the MSC Francesca. Indian officials said there is one Indian citizen in the crew of the Epaminondas, while 21 Indian citizens are on the Euphoria, which was also shot at but not seized. Technomar Shipping, managing the Epaminondas, said all 21 crewmembers were safe and that the vessel sustained damage during an attack approximately 20 nautical miles northwest of Oman.

Widespread denunciations followed the attacks on the three containerships. Panama’s Foreign Ministry condemned the attacks, specifically the seizure of the Panama-flagged MSC Francesca. The trade group BIMCO urged all parties to show restraint and help protect innocent seafarers. IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez called the attacks and seizures of commercial ships unacceptable, urging for the reckless actions to cease and for any ships and innocent seafarers to be released immediately.
