President Donald Trump has announced that Israel and Lebanon will extend their ceasefire by an additional three weeks, according to a Bloomberg report. Trump disclosed the agreement in a social-media post following a meeting with envoys from Israel and Lebanon in the Oval Office on Thursday. The extension is intended to create room for progress on a long-term accord and removes a barrier to ending the U.S. conflict with Iran.

The current ceasefire had been scheduled to expire on April 26. Trump stated that he will host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in the near future. In his announcement, the President said that the United States will collaborate with Lebanon to help it defend itself against Hezbollah, though he offered no specifics on that assistance.

There was no immediate comment from Israel or Hezbollah. The group, which was not party to the original ceasefire, had largely adhered to its terms despite being weakened since it triggered Israeli strikes by firing on Israel in early March. The ceasefire is designed to enable negotiations for a permanent peace agreement between Israel and Lebanon, two countries that do not formally recognize each other. Maintaining the truce is also seen as critical to Trump’s broader effort to settle the U.S. and Israeli war with Iran, Hezbollah’s main backer. Iranian leaders had insisted that any deal with the U.S. must include a halt to Israeli attacks on Lebanon.

In an interview last week, Trump expressed hope for a lasting deal and said the U.S. would not allow the bombing of Lebanon to continue. Netanyahu, however, had previously maintained that the conflict in Lebanon was separate from the ceasefire between Iran and the U.S., and that fighting against Hezbollah would persist.
