Woo hoo! Everybody hits!

The rally cry of Phillies games in the last days of the Vet and first days of the Bank seemed apropos Monday evening at Manheim Central’s Doe Run Elementary softball stadium.

The Barons, winners of three straight and tied with Donegal for second place in Section Three of Lancaster-Lebanon softball, hosted section leader Northern Lebanon with an eye on bringing the Vikings back to the pack. Or at least slowing their roll.

But every Viking hit. And then some.

Paced by Addison Hollenbach’s 4-for-4, 4-RBI effort, Northern Lebanon (8-0 L-L, 13-3 overall) banged out 16 hits and defeated the Barons 17-1 in a game shortened to three innings by the mercy rule.

There was no mercy in the Vikings’ bats. They sent 10 batters to the plate in a four-run first inning, 16 in an 11-run third. Every batter in the lineup had at least one hit.

In addition to Hollenbach, Steph Palkovic (2-for-4, RBI), Addison Kubica (2-for-3, 3 RBIs), Sophia Roye (2-for-3, RBI) and Mykenna Johnson (2-for-2, 2 RBIs) each had multi-hit games.

“We knew we had to come out and leave it all out there,” Hollenbach said. “Seventeen runs just looks crazy but, yeah, we played well together today.”

Under the fading warmth of the late afternoon and a high blue sky, the day got off to an inauspicious start for the Barons (5-3, 8-7) when starting pitcher Mea Redcay threw away Vikings leadoff batter Ryleigh Hopkins’ comebacker for a two-base error.

With one out Hollenbach singled in Hopkins. After walking Kubica, Redcay could see her way out as she retired Alyssa Shirey on a fly ball to left.

But Roye tripled in Hollenbach, Johnson walked and Makenzie West doubled in both Kubica and Roye before Keira Palski walked, turning over the lineup.

“When you can be productive, 6-7-8-9,” said head coach Bob Bashore, whose Vikes extended their win streak to four games, “that’s helping us a lot right now.”

Monday evening Roye, Johnson, West and Palski, the No. 6 through 9 hitters in the lineup, were a combined 6-for-7 with three walks and six RBI.

The Vikings’ four runs in the first were all unearned, but on the board nonetheless. Northern Lebanon tacked on two earned runs in the second inning on Kubica’s two-run single.

When the Vikings loaded the bases to start the third, on singles from Johnson and Palski, and West’s hit by pitch, Redcay yielded the circle to Kendall Newswanger.

Thirteen batters, eight hits and 11 runs later all that stood between the Vikings and loading the bus for the trip back to Fredericksburg was the Barons’ bottom of the third.

Roye, the Vikings’ freshman No. 2 starter, walked Lexa Valdez to start the inning. With two out Rilee Bender reached on an error.

Abby Logan erased the zero on the Barons’ side of the board, singling in Valdez, but Roye froze Newswanger on a 1-2 pitch, and the game was over.

With that, barring any unforeseen circumstances, the picture in Section Three comes into focus. With a pair of one-run victories over Donegal, and the dangerous part of the schedule behind them, the Vikings are in position to claim their fifth straight section title.

With a home game remaining with Manheim, Donegal (6-2, 12-4) has the inside track for the section’s second invitation to the L-L playoffs, which begin May 8.
