CBS says USS Truxtun and USS Mason came under Iranian fire in the Strait of Hormuz while escorted by Apache helicopters and aircraft.
CBS News reported that the US destroyers USS Truxtun and USS Mason came under Iranian fire while passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Citing US Defense Department officials, the outlet said the warships have already entered the Persian Gulf. During the transit, they were subjected to heavy fire, but neither destroyer was hit. The vessels were escorted by Apache attack helicopters and other aircraft.
CBS News noted that the passage took place after US President Donald Trump said the Navy was ready to help commercial ships move through the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier, US Central Command said the destroyers had crossed the strait under the «Project Freedom» initiative. The military also reported that two US-flagged commercial vessels had successfully completed the route. According to media reports, the Pentagon contacted dozens of shipping companies to encourage vessel traffic through the strait.
