{"id":100284,"date":"2026-05-06T09:27:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T09:27:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/100284\/"},"modified":"2026-05-06T09:27:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T09:27:10","slug":"iranian-president-calls-zaidi-as-pm-designate-signals-iraq-could-be-mediator","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/100284\/","title":{"rendered":"Iranian president calls Zaidi as PM-designate signals Iraq could be mediator"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BAGHDAD \u2014 Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called Prime Minister-designate Ali al-Zaidi on Tuesday evening to congratulate him on his designation, with the two sides agreeing to exchange visits and discussing ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation.<\/p>\n<p>During the call, Zaidi said Iraq supports \u201cthe diplomatic track and dialogue to resolve disputes and contain crises,\u201d and suggested Iraq could play \u201ca mediating role between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America,\u201d according to a statement from the prime minister\u2019s media office.<\/p>\n<p>The call follows a phone call last week from U.S. President Donald Trump, who expressed support for Zaidi and called for a government \u201cfree of terrorism.\u201d The two discussed bilateral relations and \u201cjoint work and bilateral cooperation to consolidate stability in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zaidi was nominated last week by the Coordination Framework following the withdrawal of both Maliki and incumbent Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.
