Summer Lee, who represents Squirrel Hill \u2014 has demanded that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio disclose details of Israel\u2019s alleged nuclear weapons arsenal.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot develop a coherent nonproliferation policy for the Middle East,\u201d they <a href=\"https:\/\/castro.house.gov\/media-center\/press-releases\/congressman-castro-leads-group-of-30-lawmakers-in-demanding-end-to-ambiguity-in-israels-nuclear-capabilities\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wrote <\/a>in a letter dated Monday, \u201cincluding with respect to Iran\u2019s civil nuclear program and Saudi Arabia\u2019s civil nuclear ambitions, while maintaining a policy of official silence about the nuclear weapons capabilities of one party central to the ongoing conflict in which the United States is a direct participant.\u201d\n        <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe ask that you hold Israel to the same standard of transparency that the United States expects from any other country that may be pursuing or retaining nuclear weapons capability,\u201d said the group, led by Texas Congressman Joaquin Castro.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-promo\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/jewishchronicle.timesofisrael.com\/signup\/?utm_source=jewishchronicle-articles&amp;utm_medium=middle-link&amp;utm_campaign=signup-buttons\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGet The Jewish Chronicle Weekly Edition by email and never miss our top stories<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/jewishchronicle.timesofisrael.com\/signup\/?utm_source=jewishchronicle-articles&amp;utm_medium=middle-link&amp;utm_campaign=signup-buttons\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFree Sign Up<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Israel does not confirm or deny having atomic weapons, maintaining a policy of official ambiguity on the issue, as both Democratic and Republican American presidents have also done over the decades. Monday\u2019s letter is expected to be ignored.<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic representatives argued in the letter that Congress \u201chas a constitutional responsibility to be fully informed about the nuclear balance in the Middle East, the risk of escalation by any party to this conflict, and the administration\u2019s planning and contingencies for such scenarios. We do not believe we have received that information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They asked for details on Israeli warheads and launchers, enrichment capabilities, and what the US has been told about Israeli doctrine and red lines, as well as what is produced at the Dimona nuclear reactor. The facility at Dimona, a southern city targeted by Iran in the recent war, is said to be the home of Israel\u2019s alleged nuclear weapons program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States openly acknowledges the nuclear weapons programs of the United Kingdom, France, India, Pakistan, Russia, China and North Korea,\u201d they wrote. \u201cWe ask that Israel be held to the same standard as any other foreign country, and that the United States government speaks candidly about its potential nuclear weapons capabilities, whatever they may be.\u201d PJC<\/p>\n<p>Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A group of 30 House Democrats \u2014 including Rep.
