{"id":103098,"date":"2026-05-07T22:52:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T22:52:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/103098\/"},"modified":"2026-05-07T22:52:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T22:52:08","slug":"hormuz-disruption-avoids-red-sea-style-schedule-reliability-collapse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/103098\/","title":{"rendered":"Hormuz Disruption Avoids Red Sea-Style Schedule Reliability Collapse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhile Iran\u2019s threats against shipping in the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/strait-of-hormuz\/\" id=\"auto-tag_strait-of-hormuz\" data-tag=\"strait-of-hormuz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a> have rattled energy markets and <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/logistics\/iran-war-strait-of-hormuz-vietnam-shipping-costs-delays-birchbury-donald-trump-tolls-insurance-vessel-traffic-1238890801\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">pushed up freight rates<\/a> since the start of the war in Iran, schedule reliability across global shipping improved in the weeks after\u2014a glaring contrast from what occurred at the start of the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/red-sea\/\" id=\"auto-tag_red-sea\" data-tag=\"red-sea\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Red Sea<\/a> crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAccording to data from maritime shipping analysis firm Sea-Intelligence, global schedule reliability in March 2026 improved by 3.9 percentage points from the month prior, exceeding normal pre-pandemic seasonal baselines tracked from 2011 to 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThose baseline averages typically increased 1.2 percentage points from February to March, with this year\u2019s sequential shift seeing an additional 2.7-percentage-point structural improvement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe story in the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/logistics\/houthis-red-sea-suez-canal-iran-war-strait-of-hormuz-container-shipping-ocean-carriers-middle-east-conflict-1238869224\/\" id=\"related_article_link_red-sea\" data-tag=\"red-sea\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Red Sea<\/a> painted a far different picture for worldwide schedule reliability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhile November-to-January baseline averages declined 7.7 percentage points during the measured period, an additional 2.6 percentage points of structural drag held down reliability between November 2023 and January 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDuring these three months, Iran-aligned Houthi militants in Yemen began <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/logistics\/red-sea-houthi-attacks-suez-canal-msc-cma-cgm-maersk-hapag-lloyd-container-ships-vessels-israel-hamas-war-gaza-1238826707\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">attacking commercial ships<\/a>, resulting in major ocean carriers opting to <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/logistics\/maersk-hapag-lloyd-suspend-shipping-red-sea-houthi-attacks-strait-suez-canal-msc-israel-hamas-war-gaza-1238826614\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">snub the Suez Canal<\/a> to instead sail around southern Africa\u2019s Cape of Good Hope. The mass diversions resulted in a 10-to-14-day extension of transit times for goods traveling from Asia to either Europe or the U.S. East Coast, knocking many service schedules off their usual loop at the same time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cAt the global aggregate level, the Red Sea crisis created a measurable drag on global schedule reliability. Conversely, the Hormuz disruption has not yet registered as a global negative event,\u201d said Alan Murphy, CEO of Sea-Intelligence, in a Thursday update. \u201cUnlike the Red Sea crisis, which acted as a transit time penalty, the Hormuz blockade created a hard volume shock. Faced with an impassable strait, carriers did not hold vessels in indefinite anchorage. Instead, they overwhelmingly chose to <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcingjournal.com\/topics\/logistics\/persian-gulf-cargo-bookings-81-vizion-msc-end-of-voyage-strait-of-hormuz-middle-east-us-iran-war-ocean-carriers-1234816448\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">abandon the blocked network<\/a> entirely, leading to a near total collapse in vessel arrivals to the Middle East.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe impacts to logistics operations have largely been localized to the neighboring countries in the Gulf, with Murphy pointing out that carriers were forced to abruptly offload their diverted Middle East bound pipeline cargo at the nearest viable hubs outside the blockade. This includes <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/logistics\/strait-of-hormuz-traffic-persian-gulf-india-nhava-sheva-mundra-port-congestion-xeneta-freight-rates-fedex-iran-war-1238864884\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">ports on India\u2019s west coast<\/a> including Nhava Sheva and Mundra, as well as Colombo in Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cBecause these hubs received massive, unplanned discharges of cargo, a landside bottleneck was generated,\u201d Murphy said. \u201cThe sheer volume of this dumped cargo quickly overwhelmed physical yard space, causing schedule reliability crises on unrelated trade lanes which used the same transshipment hubs in their service strings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/cma-cgm\/\" id=\"auto-tag_cma-cgm\" data-tag=\"cma-cgm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CMA CGM<\/a> is the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/container-shipping\/\" id=\"auto-tag_container-shipping\" data-tag=\"container-shipping\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">container shipping<\/a> company to leverage landside operations in an attempt to keep cargo moving in the Persian Gulf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe ocean carrier signed a deal with AD Ports Group to extend its reach beyond their shared terminal at the U.A.E.\u2019s Khalifa Port, giving the company multiple inland and gateway routing options across the country and the wider region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe partners plan to anchor <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/logistics\/cma-cgm-ship-hit-strait-of-hormuz-iran-war-container-shipping-us-naval-blockade-south-asia-port-congestion-1238922208\/\" id=\"related_article_link_cma-cgm\" data-tag=\"cma-cgm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CMA CGM<\/a>\u2019s ocean-borne cargo flows across AD Ports\u2019 consolidated inland intermodal network of railroad-linked container depots, dry ports and cargo depots. The network extends trade corridor optionality to the borders of Saudi Arabia and Oman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cBy linking maritime services more directly to inland cargo flows, this partnership supports more efficient routing, stronger supply chain resilience and improved service reach for our customers,\u201d said Jesper Stenbak, regional director in the Middle East Gulf, Indian sub-Continent and Indian Ocean of CMA CGM Group in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe move from CMA CGM follows the recent decision from Hapag-Lloyd to use third-party feeder services to pick up and move goods at Gulf ports that were transported via land.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tProject Freedom back on?\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAlthough ocean carriers are pursuing more landside alternatives, vessels trapped in the Persian Gulf could soon catch a break.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOn Thursday, the Wall Street Journal reported that the Trump administration is now aiming to restart its operation to guide ships through the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/logistics\/dhl-ceo-tobias-meyer-iran-war-strait-of-hormuz-oil-shortfall-jet-fuel-costs-prices-air-cargo-freight-rates-q1-earnings-1238937671\/\" id=\"related_article_link_strait-of-hormuz\" data-tag=\"strait-of-hormuz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tPresident Donald Trump first announced <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/logistics\/maersk-transit-strait-of-hormuz-us-military-escort-ships-msc-hapag-lloyd-project-freedom-ceasefire-pivot-1238939934\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u201cProject Freedom\u201d<\/a> Monday, with the U.S. military escorting two American-flagged ships, including a Maersk-owned vehicle carrier, through the passage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut only two days later, the operation was <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/logistics\/cma-cgm-project-freedom-president-donald-trump-strait-of-hormuz-iran-war-naval-blockade-1238944763\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">put on hold<\/a> without much elaboration, other than that Pakistan and other countries requested it to move negotiations forward that would end the war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe WSJ report revealed that the administration originally scrapped the plans after Saudi Arabia and Kuwait imposed restrictions on the U.S. use of their military bases.
