{"id":103119,"date":"2026-05-07T23:05:27","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T23:05:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/103119\/"},"modified":"2026-05-07T23:05:27","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T23:05:27","slug":"with-ceasefires-on-three-fronts-hoped-for-war-gains-suspended-in-dangerous-limbo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/103119\/","title":{"rendered":"With ceasefires on three fronts, hoped-for war gains suspended in dangerous limbo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After being at war with Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran, Israel is now in a ceasefire against all three enemies.<\/p>\n<p>The Israel Defense Forces has certainly caused significant damage to its adversaries on all those fronts, but by no means has the threat dissipated.<\/p>\n<p>While ceasefires brokered by US President Donald Trump \u2014 and largely imposed on Israel \u2014 are officially still in place, they remain extremely precarious.<\/p>\n<p>The direction of all the post-October 7, 2023, wars is up in the air, but there are truths we can identify in order to make sense of what has been accomplished, where Israel stands, and what could happen in the next stage.<\/p>\n<p>Israel has not won in Gaza\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a conference one year ago, then-strategic affairs minister Ron Dermer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/dermer-predicts-war-will-be-over-in-a-year-regional-peace-deals-will-follow\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">promised<\/a> that in twelve months\u2019 time, Israel \u201cwill have won\u201d the war that began on October 7.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tGet The Times of Israel&#8217;s Daily Edition<br \/>\n\t\t\tby email and never miss our top stories\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tBy signing up, you agree to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/terms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terms<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In Gaza, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other top Israeli officials have been consistent about the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/netanyahu-says-hoping-for-hostage-deal-as-soon-as-possible-skirts-question-on-whether-israel-intends-to-control-gaza\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> aims of war<\/a>, beyond the return of all the hostages \u2014 \u201cthat Hamas can no longer act, that it no longer has governance or military capacities and that Gaza cannot be a threat to Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHamas will be disarmed \u2014 either the easy way or the hard way,\u201d Netanyahu threatened on another occasion.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3537324\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/F250428CG5011-e1745922075261-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tStrategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer speaks at the Jewish News Syndicate conference in Jerusalem, April 28, 2025. Hamas continues to hold almost half of Gaza\u2019s territory, but more importantly, governs virtually every Gazan.<\/p>\n<p>And its leaders say openly they won\u2019t give up their weapons. \u201cCriminalizing the resistance, its weapons, and those who carried it out is something we should not accept,\u201d senior Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/senior-hamas-leader-reaffirms-terror-group-wont-disarm-or-accept-foreign-intervention-in-gaza\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> in February, only the latest in a series of Hamas officials to make clear that talk of disarmament is a fantasy.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3810907\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/AP26079245478396-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tPalestinian gunmen from Hamas and Islamic Jihad gather next to Eid al-Fitr prayers in Gaza City, Friday, March 20, 2026. (AP\/Abdel Kareem Hana)<\/p>\n<p>Since then, Nickolay Mladenov, leading Trump\u2019s Board of Peace, has been talking with Hamas leaders for weeks, and gave the group until April 11 to accept the Board\u2019s proposal for it to gradually hand over all of its arms.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the terror group submitted a counteroffer to the Board of Peace, insisting that the issue of its weapons only be addressed as part of a framework culminating in the establishment of a Palestinian state.<\/p>\n<p>Hamas is showing no sign of loosening its grip on Gaza, and there is no evident path to removing it as the most powerful force in the Strip. Israeli officials might engage in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/netanyahu-to-convene-security-cabinet-tomorrow-as-tensions-simmer-with-iran-report-return-to-gaza-fighting-to-also-be-discussed\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">occasional palaver<\/a> about going back to war in Gaza, but there is absolutely nothing indicating that a return to high-intensity combat against Hamas is a possibility anytime in the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026or in Lebanon\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Hezbollah, hammered by Israeli assassinations and a limited ground invasion, agreed to a humiliating ceasefire in November 2024. Under the terms of that truce, Hezbollah was required to vacate southern Lebanon and be replaced by the Lebanese military, as well as give up its weapons.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3797522\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/AP26076413166954-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tLebanese President Joseph Aoun gestures to journalists at the Presidential Palace, in Baabda, east of Beirut, Lebanon, May 21, 2025. (AP Photo\/Hassan Ammar, File)<\/p>\n<p>A new, anti-Hezbollah government came to power in the wake of the ceasefire, which tasked the Lebanese army with disarming Hezbollah by the end of the year. Far less capable than Hezbollah, the Lebanese Armed Forces has done some work in clearing some sites of weapons in southern Lebanon, but has not touched the bulk of the group\u2019s arsenal in the rest of the country.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the assessment in Israel was that Hezbollah was so badly beaten, it would remain cowed for the foreseeable future. After all, it didn\u2019t do anything during the 12-day war in June 2025.<\/p>\n<p>But Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Guards quietly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/how-irans-irgc-rebuilt-lebanons-hezbollah-to-be-ready-for-war\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rebuilt<\/a> Hezbollah\u2019s military command, plugging gaps with Iranian officers and changing the command structure.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3810775\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/AFP__20260425__A8XZ6KE__v4__HighRes__TopshotLebanonIsraelUsIranWarDemo-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tA Hezbollah party supporter holds a large postcard with the images of the group\u2019s leaders assassinated by Israel, Hashem Safieddine (L) and Hassan Nasrallah (C) and current leader Naim Qassem, during a solidarity rally in Beirut\u2019s southern suburbs on April 25, 2026 (IBRAHIM AMRO \/ AFP)<\/p>\n<p>Hezbollah surprised Israel by showing its renewed fighting spirit, jumping into the US-Israeli war with Iran on March 2, firing hundreds of rockets and drones at northern Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Israel responded by sending thousands of troops into Lebanon in a steadily expanding offensive. Many saw this as the opportunity to finally deal Hezbollah the fatal blow Israel failed to deliver in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>When Trump imposed a halt to the campaign against Iran, Israel insisted that it would keep fighting Hezbollah, and that now it could shift its full focus on the resurgent group.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3817684\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/WhatsApp_Image_2026-05-06_at_15.13.38_0-640x400.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tIDF Chief of Staff Lt. Eyal Zamir described the fight against Hezbollah as the military\u2019s \u201cprimary combat zone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And Netanyahu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/netanyahu-ceasefire-doesnt-cover-lebanon-us-told-israel-its-committed-to-achieving-our-shared-goals-in-talks-with-iran\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">insisted<\/a> in early April that the Iran ceasefire \u201cdoes not include Lebanon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Less than two weeks later, it did. Trump announced a 10-day ceasefire in Lebanon, and Netanyahu was left to defend his willingness to agree to the truce by pointing out how much Israel has done in weakening Hezbollah over the last two years.<\/p>\n<p>Trump then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/trump-declares-3-week-truce-extension-after-hosting-2nd-round-of-israel-lebanon-talks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> a three-week extension to the ceasefire, amid efforts to get Lebanon\u2019s President Joseph Aoun to Washington to meet directly with Netanyahu.<\/p>\n<p>Israel is still fighting Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, and on Wednesday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/two-soldiers-hurt-in-hezbollah-drone-attack-in-south-lebanon-idf-hits-terror-sites\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">carried out<\/a> its first strike in Beirut in nearly a month.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3817906\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/AFP__20260506__B22M8WH__v1__HighRes__LebanonIsraelIranUsWar-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tPeople gather at the site of an Israeli airstrike that targeted Beirut\u2019s southern suburbs Haret Hreik neighborhood, on May 6, 2026. (Photo by Ibrahim AMRO \/ AFP)<\/p>\n<p>Yet nothing Israel is doing is putting Hezbollah\u2019s survival as a political force or military organization in danger. If anything, the dynamics since the Iran war have been working in Hezbollah\u2019s favor.<\/p>\n<p>Before the campaign, Israel had the legitimacy to attack Hezbollah across the country, while the Shiite group took its lumps quietly. Now Israel has limits on where it can operate due to the ceasefire, while Hezbollah is striking Israeli troops with increasing bravado.<\/p>\n<p>And no peace agreement is about to emerge between the Lebanese state and Israel. Aoun can\u2019t even agree to meet Netanyahu, given the Hezbollah threat of violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026or in Iran<\/p>\n<p>On the first day of Operation Rising Lion, Netanyahu said that \u201cthe goal of the operation is to put an end to the threat from the Ayatollah regime in Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The core of that effort was to target the nuclear and ballistic missile program.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2026\/02\/AP25363767391022.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3753991\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/AP25363767391022-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tUS President Donald Trump (R) shakes hands with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as Trump listens to a question from a reporter at the end of a news conference at Mar-a-Lago, on December 29, 2025, in Palm Beach, Florida. (AP Photo\/Alex Brandon)<\/p>\n<p>Though Netanyahu didn\u2019t lay it out explicitly as a war aim, it was clear that he hoped \u2014 even expected \u2014 that the regime would fall. Israel, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/at-site-of-iranian-missile-attack-netanyahu-says-israel-bringing-freedom-to-iranians-acting-for-the-sake-of-humanity\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>, would \u201ccreate conditions that will enable the brave Iranian people to cast off the yoke of this murderous regime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis operation will continue as long as necessary,\u201d Netanyahu promised.<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s military and leadership were badly damaged, without a doubt.<\/p>\n<p>But US intelligence<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/report-iran-still-able-to-access-around-70-of-its-pre-war-missile-stocks-60-of-launchers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> assesses<\/a> that Iran likely still has access to around 70 percent of its pre-war ballistic missile stockpiles, and around 60 percent of its missile launchers.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3797107\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/F260407MK06-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tPart of a missile fired from Iran toward Israel is seen after it hit the ground in the Golan Heights, April 7, 2026. (Maor Kinsbursky\/Flash90)<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s nuclear program, hit hard in June 2025, wasn\u2019t set back in any meaningful fashion this time around. American assessments<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/iran-no-further-to-nuclear-weapon-than-it-was-before-war-us-intel-agencies-assess\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> indicate<\/a> that the time Iran would need to build a nuclear weapon has not changed since last summer. Iran\u2019s 440 kilograms of highly enriched uranium remain in the country, with no agreement or plan to remove it.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, military capabilities can be rebuilt, especially if \u2014 in the context of an agreement with the US \u2014 money is flooding into a country that has consistently shown it will prioritize rearmament over the welfare of its citizens.<\/p>\n<p>Nor are there any indications that the regime is facing collapse. It has shown coherence and stability, and now even Netanyahu has stopped talking about the Iranian people rising up.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3799645\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/AP26101454290409-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tIn this photo released by the Pakistan Prime Minister Office, Iran\u2019s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, left, meets with hand with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in Islamabad, Pakistan, April 11, 2026 (Pakistan Prime Minister Office via AP)<\/p>\n<p>An agreement with Trump would cement the regime\u2019s standing even further and allow it to start easing economic pressures facing the public.<\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu himself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/netanyahu-left-with-vague-promises-no-clear-victories-after-another-war-ends-without-a-decisive-win\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">admitted<\/a> that Israel \u201chas more goals to complete,\u201d in a video statement released after the ceasefire between the US and Iran took effect.<\/p>\n<p>Trump really, really does not want to go back to war<\/p>\n<p>The US president might issue bombastic threats against Iran every day \u2014 Iran will be \u201cblown off the face of the earth\u201d if it strikes US vessels;\u00a0 he will bomb \u201cat a much higher level and intensity\u201d if Tehran refuses a deal \u2014 but it\u2019s plain that he is desperate to avoid a return to war.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3815109\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/AP26122859454902-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tUS President Donald Trump talks to reporters before he boards Air Force One at Palm Beach International Airport in West Palm Beach, Florida, May 2, 2026, en route to Miami. (AP Photo\/Matt Rourke)<\/p>\n<p>Last month, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/trump-says-he-does-not-want-to-extend-ceasefire-with-iran\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">indicated<\/a> clearly that he wouldn\u2019t extend the original two-week ceasefire. \u201cI don\u2019t want to do that. We don\u2019t have that much time,\u201d he<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/trump-says-he-does-not-want-to-extend-ceasefire-with-iran\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> said<\/a>. \u201cI expect to be bombing because I think that\u2019s a better attitude to go in with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then, hours before the truce was about to expire, he unilaterally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/iran-undecided-on-talks-as-ceasefire-enters-final-hours-trump-they-have-to-negotiate\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">extended<\/a> it indefinitely, saying it was a Pakistani request. In the meantime, Iran is maintaining its effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p>Even Iran\u2019s repeated bombing of the United Arab Emirates, a close ally of both the US and Iran, didn\u2019t move Trump. Instead of making good on his bombast, he made excuses for Iran, insisting that it had not violated the ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[It was] not heavy firing,\u201d Trump said. \u201cThey were shot down for the most part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump seems desperate for a deal, pushing back red lines, ignoring violations, and giving optimistic forecasts that Iranians reject.<\/p>\n<p>Iran does not seem especially afraid<\/p>\n<p>Tehran is acting like it recognizes that Trump is done fighting. (Amirhossein KHORGOOEI \/ ISNA \/ AFP)<\/p>\n<p>While Trump baldly broadcasts his desire for a deal, Iran acts like it couldn\u2019t care less either way, and there is nothing to indicate it has changed its negotiating position much.<\/p>\n<p>As before the war, Tehran is still willing to make limited concessions on its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.<\/p>\n<p>Even a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/us-iran-said-closing-in-on-framework-for-permanent-deal-as-trump-renews-bomb-threats\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> month-long Memorandum of Understanding meant to end the war and lay the groundwork for talks \u2014 without requiring Iran to permanently end its nuclear enrichment \u2014 wasn\u2019t enough for Iran. An Iranian spokesman called it \u201cmore of an American wish list than a reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Iran will keep its missiles and proxies\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>From the outset of the war on Iran, the White House has said that ending Tehran\u2019s support for armed proxies and destroying its ballistic missile program were key war aims.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re ensuring that the Iranian regime cannot continue to arm, fund, and direct terrorist armies outside of their borders,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/releases\/2026\/04\/president-trumps-clear-and-unchanging-objectives-drive-decisive-success-against-iranian-regime\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> Trump on day 3 of the war.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3788323\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/AP26083587833190-1-e1774550910561-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tDomestically built Iranian missiles are displayed as part of a permanent exhibition in a recreational area of northern Tehran, Iran, March 24, 2026. (AP Photo\/Vahid Salemi)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States is conducting an operation to eliminate the threat of Iran\u2019s short-range ballistic missiles and the threat posed by its navy\u2026 That is the clear objective of this mission,\u201d Secretary of State Marco Rubio insisted the same day.<\/p>\n<p>Neither appears to be part of any deal being negotiated between the US and Iran, which seems to solely deal with Iran\u2019s nuclear program, judging by Trump\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about Iran\u2019s ballistic missiles in an interview this week, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/trump-if-we-return-to-war-on-iran-it-will-take-2-3-weeks-to-complete\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">offered<\/a> weakly, \u201cLook, missiles are bad, but yeah, and they do have to cap it, but this is about they cannot have a nuclear weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also refused to pledge that Iran would be stopped from funding proxies, only saying that they wouldn\u2019t be in a position economically to do so, given the damage being done to Iran\u2019s energy infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>There will be no relief for Israel\u2019s reservists<\/p>\n<p>Faced with enemies on its borders that aren\u2019t going anywhere, Israel has chosen the most manpower-heavy response.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3813239\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/bc6f414d-19b6-45d1-b607-7c9c8f4f050e-1-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tIDF reservists of the 226th Paratroopers Brigade operate in southern Lebanon, in a handout photo issued on April 29, 2026. For years, that approach guided tiny Israel in its wars against Arab armies, allowing reservists to get back to their jobs and families after wars that lasted only weeks, at most.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Netanyahu has chosen the strategy of buffer zones over Israel\u2019s borders \u2014 in Gaza, Lebanon, and in Syria. Each one needs multiple brigades to maintain, on top of demands along the border and in the West Bank.<\/p>\n<p>That burden, as it has since October 7, 2023, falls on reservists as well as active-duty formations. Some 80,000 ultra-Orthodox men aged between 18 and 24 are currently believed to be eligible for military service, but have not enlisted. The IDF has said it urgently needs 12,000 recruits \u2014 mostly combat troops \u2014 due to the strain on standing and reserve forces caused by the multi-front war of recent years.<\/p>\n<p>A coalition bill that would ostensibly increase military conscription in the Haredi community ultimately enshrines continued exemptions for full-time yeshiva students. Even that flawed legislation faces an uncertain future.<\/p>\n<p>According to a Haredi news site, Netanyahu recently<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/pm-said-to-ask-haredim-to-again-shelve-draft-exemption-bill-this-time-until-after-election\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> requested<\/a> that ultra-Orthodox lawmakers agree to put off the unpopular legislation until after the 2026 elections, telling senior ultra-Orthodox lawmakers in a private meeting that his coalition does not have a majority to push the bill through.<\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu can\u2019t use national security as his main campaign pitch<\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu saw the fact that October 7 happened on watch as his major political vulnerability.<\/p>\n<p>He has sought to address that problem in a number of ways \u2014 shifting responsibility to the security services, changing records, and preventing the establishment of an apolitical commission of investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3656684\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/picture-kidnepping-640x400.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tSuhayb Razem held by a Hamas terrorist at the Nova festival site, October 7, 2023. He might have been in power during the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust, but only he could have led such an effective response, the argument goes.
