{"id":103277,"date":"2026-05-08T01:22:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T01:22:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/103277\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T01:22:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T01:22:12","slug":"facing-a-mixed-reception-at-eurovision-noam-bettan-is-ready-to-enjoy-the-journey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/103277\/","title":{"rendered":"Facing a mixed reception at Eurovision, Noam Bettan is ready &#8216;to enjoy the journey&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Noam Bettan has been practicing to the sounds of booing.\n<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s Eurovision contestant is reluctant \u2013 and largely not allowed \u2013 to discuss any of the controversy surrounding Israel\u2019s participation, but he knows he won\u2019t be warmly welcomed by everyone at the song competition next week in Vienna.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m surrounded by an incredible team who make sure to shout boos at me during rehearsals, so I\u2019m prepared for it,\u201d Bettan told The Times of Israel during a video interview last month. \u201cI feel happy and proud to represent my country in such a big competition with so many viewers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the biggest critics of Israel at Eurovision \u2013 Ireland, Iceland, Spain, Slovenia and the Netherlands \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/israel-cleared-for-eurovision-2026-in-ebu-vote-netherlands-spain-ireland-slovenia-quit\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">quit this year\u2019s<\/a> contest in protest of Israel being allowed to participate, their exodus has amplified the anger among some of the competition\u2019s biggest fans.<\/p>\n<p>But Bettan \u2013 who will be 10th in the lineup in the first semifinal Tuesday night with \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/despite-war-israel-releases-michelle-its-2026-eurovision-song\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michelle<\/a>\u201d \u2013 wants to put all the noise and drama aside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very focused on what I have to do,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m not thinking about anything else, I\u2019m focused on this thing, I\u2019m looking ahead, I\u2019m rehearsing as much as possible. I\u2019m doing everything I can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bettan, 28, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/israel-taps-noam-bettan-to-represent-country-at-2026-eurovision\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">selected earlier this year<\/a> to represent Israel at the 2026 competition after winning the latest season of \u201cHakochav Haba\u201d (Rising Star). The native of Ra\u2019anana, who was born to French immigrant parents, won over viewers with his soulful vocals, charming modesty and magnetic stage presence.<\/p>\n<p>Before winning the reality TV contest Bettan was far from a household name, but he\u2019s not a newcomer to the Israeli music industry. In 2018, he placed third on the music TV competition show \u201cAviv or Eyal,\u201d and subsequently released a number of singles, including \u201cMadame,\u201d \u201cBuba\u201d and \u201cAhavot Leyom Ehad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve worked very hard for many, many years \u2014 more than eight years of hard work, Sisyphean work \u2014 with my team who has been with me through thick and thin,\u201d Bettan said. \u201cWe learned to stay strong and to lift ourselves up even when things didn\u2019t work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Growing up in the \u201cgeneration of the internet, that wants everything now,\u201d Bettan said, he had to learn that \u201csometimes things take time, and there\u2019s a way to build them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2026\/05\/F260121YG16.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-fullwidth wp-image-3815485\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/F260121YG16-1024x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tNoam Bettan, Israel\u2019s Eurovision 2026 singer, poses for a photo in Neve Ilan, near Jerusalem, January 21, 2026. (Yael Abas Guisky\/Flash90)<\/p>\n<p>If there\u2019s one thing he\u2019s learned, he said, it\u2019s \u201cdon\u2019t give up on your dreams.\u201d Even if people make fun of you or question you, \u201cat a certain point it will take shape and grow, and suddenly people will start to appreciate it\u2026 Be who you are, completely, and don\u2019t give up on who you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The singer said his appearance on the \u201cHakochav Haba\u201d TV show \u201cI think came at exactly the right time \u2013 I felt ready. I\u2019d been on many stages, in a million studios, I\u2019d put out a lot of music\u2026 it couldn\u2019t have worked out any better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Israel can still participate \u2014 for now<\/p>\n<p>Going into the TV show knowing that the top prize was representing Israel at Eurovision, said Bettan, \u201cgave me a huge boost, and I told myself I had to get there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bettan will take to the Eurovision stage next week, representing the country that once again is the source of the biggest controversy at the annual song contest. After pushing for the past two years for Israel to be ousted from the Eurovision due to the war in Gaza, a number of countries forced a vote on the issue last year among European Broadcasting Union members.<\/p>\n<p>But an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/israel-cleared-for-eurovision-2026-in-ebu-vote-netherlands-spain-ireland-slovenia-quit\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">overwhelming majority<\/a> of EBU members voted in favor of adopting a package of reforms to the contest rather than moving ahead with a direct vote on Israel\u2019s participation, clearing the way for the Kan public broadcaster to remain in the competition.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2026\/05\/AFP__20260428__A97J9XA__v1__HighRes__AustriaEntertainmentMusicEsc.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3815487 size-fullwidth\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/AFP__20260428__A97J9XA__v1__HighRes__AustriaEntertainmentMusicEsc-1024x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"640\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tThe Eurovision logo is seen during the official opening of the stage at the Wiener Stadthalle prior to the 70th Eurovision Song Contest (ESC), in Vienna, Austria on April 28, 2026. (Joe Klamar \/ AFP)<\/p>\n<p>Angry at the result of the vote, Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, Slovenia and Iceland quit in protest, leaving just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/35-countries-confirmed-to-take-part-in-2026-eurovision-despite-boycotts\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">35 countries<\/a> taking part, the lowest number since 2004.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/eurovision-unveils-voting-changes-seemingly-aimed-at-complaints-over-israel\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">adopted reforms<\/a> \u2013 coming after Israel performed exceedingly well in the popular vote in 2024 and 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/eurovision-organizers-dismiss-claims-of-voter-fraud-after-israel-tops-televote\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sparking allegations<\/a> of unfair voting practices \u2013 include capping the number of votes per person at 20 instead of 10; reinstating professional juries in the semifinal rounds along with the public vote; \u201cenhanced technical measures\u201d to detect any voter fraud; and \u201cstrengthened safeguards against undue external promotion of entries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, contestants and all members of the delegations have been asked to \u201cavoid linking political views to their ESC participation\u201d as well as not to use the contest\u2019s platform \u201cas leverage by making political statements or causing controversies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bettan, who is already in Vienna with the Kan delegation, said his focus is entirely on the music and the performance, and reaching listeners around the world.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2026\/05\/260502_Corinne_Cumming_EBU00164-e1777886539594.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3815950 size-fullwidth\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/260502_Corinne_Cumming_EBU00164-e1777886539594-1024x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tIsrael\u2019s Noam Bettan performs during his first rehearsal on the Eurovision stage in Vienna, Austria, May 3, 2026. (Corinne Cumming\/EBU)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m here to give love,\u201d he said, when asked about potential protests or provocations. \u201cI understand that I only have control over myself, and what I can bring is who I am, the light I have to give to the world, the color I have to give to the world, and I\u2019m focused on that \u2013 on coming and giving love to other people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Will \u2018Michelle\u2019 be the belle of the ball?<\/p>\n<p>The young performer will be on stage next week with \u201cMichelle,\u201d a pop-style ballad about ending a toxic relationship that is largely in French \u2014 a nod to Bettan\u2019s family roots as well as the Eurovision\u2019s affinity for the Romance language \u2014 with sections in Hebrew and English. The song was written by Nadav Aharoni, Tslil Klifi and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/while-the-voting-public-loved-israels-eurovision-song-it-was-stymied-by-the-juries\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Yuval Raphael<\/a> \u2014 a survivor of the Nova festival massacre on October 7, 2023, who represented Israel at last year\u2019s Eurovision \u2013 with touches added by Bettan himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe responses [to the song] have been incredible, honestly beyond my wildest imagination, both online and on the street,\u201d said Bettan. \u201cIt\u2019s amazing and I\u2019m so happy that people love the song and are embracing it and me along with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some in Israel, however, were taken aback by the preponderance of French lyrics in a song representing Israel, but Bettan said he believes the song is catchy in any language.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that anything that\u2019s a little bit different takes a moment to digest in every aspect,\u201d he said. \u201cI think we brought something that is a little bit new and it takes a second to accept it \u2013 but within a couple of days, people were already showering it with incredible responses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Facing a potentially hostile audience and a likely mixed reception, Bettan said the advice he received from Raphael and from 2024 contestant Eden Golan was to enjoy every moment of the experience regardless.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there\u2019s one piece of advice that kept coming up again was to just enjoy the process,\u201d he said. \u201cEnjoy this thing because it\u2019s a one-time shot, you\u2019re not going to be at the Eurovision again. So my main goal is to enjoy the journey and give all the love that I can.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Noam Bettan has been practicing to the sounds of booing.
