{"id":103386,"date":"2026-05-08T03:55:16","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T03:55:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/103386\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T03:55:16","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T03:55:16","slug":"dollar-firms-as-u-s-iran-hostilities-flare-yen-steadied-by-intervention-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/103386\/","title":{"rendered":"Dollar firms as U.S.-Iran hostilities flare, yen steadied by intervention risk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The dollar firmed on Friday after renewed hostilities between the U.S. and Iran, while the yen held largely steady following fresh verbal jawboning from Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>Sopa Images | Lightrocket | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The dollar started Friday&#8217;s Asian session on a firm footing against most major currencies after renewed hostilities broke out between the U.S. and Iran, while the Japanese yen held largely steady following fresh verbal jawboning from Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. and Iran\u00a0exchanged fire\u00a0and traded barbs again on Thursday, piling fresh pressure on a fragile month-long ceasefire as Iran reviews Washington&#8217;s\u00a0proposal\u00a0to end the war.<\/p>\n<p>Oil prices\u00a0jumped, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/@CL.1\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. crude futures<\/a>\u00a0rising as much as 3% in early trading, adding to the risk-off mood in currency markets.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.DXY\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dollar index<\/a> measured against key peers was a touch firmer at 98.235. The rising tensions lifted the greenback for a second day from an over two-month low struck early in the week on hopes of a peace deal, putting it on track to finish the week largely flat.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The path towards a lasting agreement is anything but linear,&#8221; wrote Chris Weston, head of research at Pepperstone.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Traders have had to rethink the assumptions on the trajectory of the conflict and the normalization of vessel flows through Hormuz that had been made over the last couple of sessions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Markets are also bracing for the U.S. non-farm payrolls report later on Friday, and it may take an outlier number, particularly a sufficiently weak one, to really move the dial on dollar volatility, he added.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/GBP=\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sterling<\/a> traded at $1.3555, headed for its first weekly loss since March, as investors\u00a0awaited local election results\u00a0that could heap further political pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/EUR=\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">euro<\/a> was steady at $1.1727, poised to end the week a touch firmer.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/AUD=\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australian dollar<\/a> fetched $0.72059, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/NZD=\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Zealand kiwi<\/a> changed hands at $0.59365, both on track to post a winning week on improved risk appetite in earlier days.<\/p>\n<p>Traders remained focused on the Japanese yen after recent interventions and verbal warnings from Tokyo kept sharp selling at bay.
