Isaac Herzog, strengthen Chile-Israel relations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chilean President Jos\u00e9 Antonio Kast told Israeli President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/benjamin-netanyahu\/article-894644\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Isaac Herzog<\/a> on Friday that he intends to return Chile\u2019s ambassador to Israel within a few weeks, a step that will mark a significant change in relations between the two countries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Herzog met with Kast during the inauguration ceremony of Costa Rica\u2019s President, Laura Fern\u00e1ndez Delgado.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">It was Herzog\u2019s first diplomatic meeting with world leaders attending the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>Herzog and Kast discussed strengthening relations between Israel and Chile, as well as possibly restoring cooperation to its previous state, with joint efforts in agriculture, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/health-and-wellness\/article-895548\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">health<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/american-politics\/article-895487\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">artificial intelligence<\/a>, and technology.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kast explained that he faced demands from the Chilean population to address the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/article-895501\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Palestinian<\/a> issue,\u201d clarifying that he instead intends to focus on Israel-Chile diplomatic relations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">He added that his government is currently working against terrorism and antisemitism in Chile.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The Chilean ambassador to Israel was recalled in October 2023 by former President Gabriel Boric following the onset of the war with Gaza.\u00a0Chile had announced that the move was meant to protest \u201cviolations of international humanitarian law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Boric\u2019s government later escalated actions against Israel when military and embassy attaches were also removed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Herzog said following the meeting that the discussion was \u201cfor the benefit of both of our countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Honduran President Nasry Asfura also mentioned that he intends to return Honduras\u2019 ambassador to Israel, who had left the country at the beginning of the war.\u00a0Asfura discussed security and health issues with Herzog, promising to work cooperatively on
