{"id":105516,"date":"2026-05-09T17:43:14","date_gmt":"2026-05-09T17:43:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/105516\/"},"modified":"2026-05-09T17:43:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-09T17:43:14","slug":"iran-keeps-us-waiting-for-its-response-to-latest-proposal-after-flareups-in-fighting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/105516\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran keeps US waiting for its response to latest proposal after flareups in fighting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A state of relative calm prevailed around the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, after days of sporadic flareups, as the United States waited for Iran\u2019s response to its latest proposals to end more than two months of fighting and begin peace talks.<\/p>\n<p>US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Friday that Washington expected a response within hours and President Donald Trump later said it would likely be submitted \u201ctonight.\u201d But a day later, there was no sign of movement from Iran on the proposal, which would formally end the war before talks on more contentious issues, including the Iranian nuclear program.<\/p>\n<p>With US President Donald Trump due to begin a long-awaited visit to China next week, there has been mounting pressure to draw a line under the conflict, which has thrown energy markets into turmoil and posed a growing threat to the world economy.<\/p>\n<p>Recent days have seen the biggest flareups in fighting in and around the Strait of Hormuz since a ceasefire began a month ago, and the United Arab Emirates came under renewed attack on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>As Tehran kept Washington waiting for its response after saying Friday it was not paying attention to \u201cdeadlines,\u201d the Islamic Republic\u2019s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called into question the reliability of the US leadership in a call with his Turkish counterpart.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tGet The Times of Israel&#8217;s Daily Edition<br \/>\n\t\t\tby email and never miss our top stories\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tBy signing up, you agree to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/terms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terms<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe recent escalation of tensions by American forces in the Persian Gulf and their numerous actions in violating the ceasefire have added to suspicions about the motivation and seriousness of the American side in the path of diplomacy,\u201d he said, according to an Iranian account of the call published by the ISNA news agency.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said diplomacy was continuing, with his country in contact with the US and Iran \u201cday and night\u201d in an effort to extend the ceasefire and reach a peace deal.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2026\/04\/AP26115512506120.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3809745\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/AP26115512506120-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tPrime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, left, greets Iran\u2019s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi before their meeting in Islamabad, Pakistan, April 25, 2026. (Pakistan Prime Minister Office via AP)<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s foreign ministry said Saturday that it, as well as Saudi Arabia, was calling for diplomatic efforts to reach a \u201csustainable, long-term agreement\u201d to end the war.<\/p>\n<p>Egyptian and Qatari top diplomats reiterated that diplomacy is the sole path to a solution, according to a readout of a Saturday phone call between the foreign ministers of Egypt and Qatar, as Israel\u2019s Channel 12 news reported that Doha has emerged as a key player in mediating between the United States and Iran after Trump pressured the Qatari emir to help broker negotiations.\u00a0On Friday, the Qatari prime minister met with US Vice President JD Vance in Washington for talks on the US-Iran negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>UK dispatches warship toward Hormuz<\/p>\n<p>Also Saturday, the small Gulf island of Bahrain said it had arrested 41 people it said are part of a group affiliated with Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The interior ministry said investigations were ongoing but did not provide details.<\/p>\n<p>Bahrain is led by a Sunni Muslim monarchy but, like Iran, has a majority Shiite population. Rights groups have said the kingdom has used the war between Iran and the US, which bases its Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, as an excuse to crack down on dissent.<\/p>\n<p>Iran issued a warning to Bahrain. \u201cSiding with the US-backed resolution will bring severe consequences. The Strait of Hormuz is a vital lifeline; do not risk closing it on yourselves FOREVER,\u201d Ebrahim Azizi, head of the national security commission of Iran\u2019s parliament, said on social media.<\/p>\n<p>Iran has mostly blocked the critical waterway for global energy since the US and Israel launched the war on February 28, causing a global spike in fuel prices and rattling world markets.<\/p>\n<p>The US has imposed its own blockade of Iran\u2019s ports.
