So it\u2019s absolutely insane that they\u2019re here. The Russian exhibit will be eligible for the art fair&#8217;s prizes, which this year will be awarded by visitors&#8217; votes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=1378055347701057&amp;set=a.341855784654357&amp;type=3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:statement;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;statement&quot;}\" class=\"link \">statement<\/a> on Facebook, Russia&#8217;s ambassador to Italy, Aleksei Paramonov,\u00a0said there was &#8220;truly something painful and unreasonable about the European Union&#8217;s obsession with targeting Russian culture and art with sanctions and restrictions of all kinds&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Protests over Gaza<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Israeli artists are also back at the Biennale, after refusing to open their exhibit at the last edition in 2024 amid the war in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Shortly after Wednesday&#8217;s demonstration outside the Russian exhibit, about a hundred pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered in front of Israel&#8217;s pavilion, holding up banners saying &#8220;No artwashing genocide&#8221; and brandishing the names of Palestinian artists killed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/tag\/gaza\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:Gaza;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;Gaza&quot;}\" class=\"link \">Gaza<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The artist representing France,\u00a0Yto Barrada, is among more than 200 participants who have signed a letter demanding Israel&#8217;s exclusion, saying they refuse to allow organisers &#8220;to platform the Israeli state as it commits genocide&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Israeli government has accused protesters of discrimination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Representing Israel&#8217;s pavilion, sculptor Belu-Simion Fainaru that the Biennale should be based on &#8220;inclusion and dialogue and free expression. Art opens the way for the future and gives us the possibility of erasing catastrophes,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Iran absent<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;La Biennale seeks to be \u2013 and must remain \u2013 a place of truce in the name of art, culture, and artistic freedom,&#8221; organisers said in a statement following the jury&#8217;s resignation last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Days before the opening, Iran announced it would not open a pavilion.
