{"id":107706,"date":"2026-05-11T04:25:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-11T04:25:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/107706\/"},"modified":"2026-05-11T04:25:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T04:25:10","slug":"this-week-syria-and-iran-plus-national-strikes-in-belgium-and-hungarys-new-pm-euobserver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/107706\/","title":{"rendered":"THIS WEEK: Syria and Iran, plus national strikes in Belgium and Hungary\u2019s new PM \u2013 EUobserver"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While the EU celebrated the roots of its inception some 76 years ago over the weekend, tricky questions on Syria, Donald Trump and his Middle East wars, as well as Ukraine remained unresolved.<\/p>\n<p>The Saturday (9 May) Europe Day celebration came amid the inauguration of Hungary\u2019s new prime minister <a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/215229\/hungarys-new-leader-peter-magyar-walks-a-fine-line-between-patriotism-and-populism\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/215229\/hungarys-new-leader-peter-magyar-walks-a-fine-line-between-patriotism-and-populism\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Magyar,<\/a> ushering in a likely collective sigh of relief for the elite at the EU institutions in Brussels and various capitals elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Yet beyond all the weekend fanfare in Budapest and Brussels, a gruelling work week kicks off on Monday (11 May) and one day ahead of a planned national strike by Belgian trade unions.<\/p>\n<p>Day one starts with Syria.<\/p>\n<p>Monday will see in Brussels Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani, Syria\u2019s minister of foreign affairs, along with senior figures from EU states, the G7, Arab countries and the UN. Discussions will revolve rebuilding the shattered country.<\/p>\n<p>A similar event last year saw \u20ac5.8bn in pledges to help the country rebuild. Of that, \u20ac4.2bn came as grants and \u20ac1.6bn as loans. The EU pledged \u20ac2.5bn for 2025 and 2026.<\/p>\n<p>While not explicitly stated, the fate of Syrian refugees is also likely to be discussed as the <a href=\"http:\/\/EU\u2019s \u20ac620m for Syria aims to send refugees home\" rel=\"nofollow\">EU seeks to step up deportations.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/13552\/frontex-accused-of-blundering-own-safeguards-after-syrian-refugee-wins-eu-court-battle\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/e026b39e464b1e84e2f5e83cedd0acdc-600x431.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some 570,000 have already returned from Turkey last year.
