{"id":108840,"date":"2026-05-11T18:12:15","date_gmt":"2026-05-11T18:12:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/108840\/"},"modified":"2026-05-11T18:12:15","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T18:12:15","slug":"trump-says-iran-ceasefire-on-life-support-after-tehran-submitted-garbage-proposal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/108840\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump says Iran ceasefire &#8216;on life support&#8217; after Tehran submitted &#8216;garbage&#8217; proposal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON \u2014 US President Donald Trump on Monday said the ceasefire with Iran was \u201con life support,\u201d a day after he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/iran-sends-response-to-latest-us-peace-proposal-as-netanyahu-insists-war-not-over\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rejected the proposal<\/a> submitted by Iran over the weekend for a permanent truce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s unbelievably weak,\u201d Trump said of the truce, while speaking to reporters in the Oval Office. \u201cI would call it the weakest right now, after reading that piece of garbage they sent us. I didn\u2019t even finish reading it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The US president claimed that Iranian negotiators told their American counterparts that they were prepared for the US to retrieve Tehran\u2019s stockpiles of highly-enriched uranium, but then refrained from putting that concession in the response paper submitted over the weekend. Iran has shown no public indication that it is prepared to make such a concession.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo days ago, they said, \u2018You\u2019re going to have to take it.\u2019 We were going to go with them. But they changed their mind because they didn\u2019t put it in the paper,\u201d Trump told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>Trump also asserted that Iran\u2019s negotiators said that the uranium stockpiles are difficult to retrieve due to Washington\u2019s strikes on Tehran\u2019s nuclear sites last year, and that only the US or China have the tools capable of pulling it out from underground.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tGet The Times of Israel&#8217;s Daily Edition<br \/>\n\t\t\tby email and never miss our top stories\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tBy signing up, you agree to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/terms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terms<\/a><\/p>\n<p>He also claimed that Iranian negotiators had also \u201cguarantee[d that they wouldn\u2019t obtain] nuclear weapons for a very long period of time,\u201d only to leave that out of Tehran\u2019s official proposal as well.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2026\/05\/AP26131581132443.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3821340\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/AP26131581132443-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tUS President Donald Trump speaks on May 11, 2026, in the Oval Office of the White House, in Washington. (AP\/Jacquelyn Martin)<\/p>\n<p>The fact that Trump indicated he would have accepted such a guarantee, even though it was not indefinite, appears to be out of step with his longstanding insistence that he intends to ensure Iran can never obtain a nuclear weapon.<\/p>\n<p>Asked whether he still thinks he can make a deal with the current regime, Trump responded in the affirmative, while adding that it is comprised of moderates who desperately want to reach an agreement and \u201clunatics\u201d who want to keep fighting.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing criticism that he has no coherent plan in dealing with Iran, Trump insisted: \u201cI do have a plan. The plan is Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He then repeated his unproven claim that the US sent Kurdish militants guns for use against the Iranian regime but that the Kurds decided to keep them.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier Monday, in an interview with Fox News, Trump asserted that the Iranian regime was \u201cgoing to fold\u201d in talks with the US.<\/p>\n<p>Trump also said that he is considering renewing the operation to assist stuck ships out of the Iran-blocked Strait of Hormuz after he called it off last week about a day after it began. (Amirhosein Khorgooi\/ISNA via AP)<\/p>\n<p>Asked if he\u2019ll need to take out another layer of Iran\u2019s leaders amid stalled diplomatic efforts, Trump responded: \u201cI will deal with them until they make a deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A US official told The Times of Israel on Sunday evening that Trump was\u00a0holding a high-level security meeting in the White House Situation Room to discuss next steps on Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Participants in the meeting include Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine, and special envoy Steve Witkoff.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Netanyahu on Monday convened a security consultation in his office in Jerusalem, as Israeli military officials have repeatedly asserted that Israel is ready to return to fighting at any point.<\/p>\n<p>Further details on the prime minister\u2019s discussion, reported to The Times of Israel by the office of one of the attendees, were not immediately available.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2026\/05\/718.jpeg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3820882\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/718-640x400.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tPrime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu speaks to CBS News\u2019 \u201960 Minutes\u2019 in an intrerview aired May 10, 2026. (Screenshot\/60 Minutes)<\/p>\n<p>The meeting \u2014 for which Netanyahu\u2019s testimony in his corruption trial was cut short \u2014 came the day after Trump deemed Iran\u2019s response to an American ceasefire proposal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/iran-sends-response-to-latest-us-peace-proposal-as-netanyahu-insists-war-not-over\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cunacceptable,\u201d<\/a> and after the premier himself told \u201c60 Minutes\u201d that the war was \u201cnot over,\u201d citing Iran\u2019s remaining stockpile of highly enriched uranium.<\/p>\n<p>It also came ahead of direct <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/us-to-host-third-round-of-talks-between-israel-and-lebanon-next-week\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Israel-Lebanon talks<\/a> in Washington later this week, and amid a continued US blockade on Iranian ports and Iran\u2019s closure of the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei, in a press conference Monday, pronounced the US \u201cthe greatest threat to international peace and security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe very presence of the United States in the region, the US military bases in the region,\u201d said Baghaei, \u201care an example of creating a cycle of violence and bullying in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2024\/10\/AFP__20241028__36KY2Z7__v1__HighRes__IranIsraelConflict-e1730106294631.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3406745\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/AFP__20241028__36KY2Z7__v1__HighRes__IranIsraelConflict-e1730106294631-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tIran\u2019s foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei holds a weekly press conference in Tehran on October 28, 2024. (ATTA KENARE \/ AFP)<\/p>\n<p>Contrasting what he called Iran\u2019s \u201cgenerous and responsible offer\u201d to Washington\u2019s \u201cunreasonable demands,\u201d Baghaei listed Tehran\u2019s demands as \u201can end to the war, lifting the [US] blockade and piracy, and \u2060releasing Iranian assets that have \u2060been unjustly frozen in banks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The demands also included \u201csafe passage through the Strait \u2060of Hormuz, \u2060and establishing security in the region and Lebanon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The US has been blockading Iran\u2019s ports as Iran has blocked the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has demanded a ceasefire in Lebanon as part of the talks as well; while there is technically a truce in place there, it has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/idf-reservist-killed-in-hezbollah-explosive-drone-attack-in-northern-israel\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">largely unraveled.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIran has shown that it is a responsible power in the region, and at the same time, we are not bullying,\u201d Baghaei said. \u201cWe are against bullying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2026\/05\/AP26126592665556-1.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3821110\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/AP26126592665556-1-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tA man waves an Iranian flag for a pro-government campaign under a billboard with graphic showing Strait of Hormuz and sewn lips of US President Donald Trump in a square in downtown Tehran, Iran, on May 6, 2026. (AP Photo\/Vahid Salemi)<\/p>\n<p>Baghaei called on European countries not to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz, saying: \u201cThey should refrain from any move that would undermine their interests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis war is not only unethical but also illegal. The US and Israel started their aggression against Iran.
