{"id":108905,"date":"2026-05-11T19:02:24","date_gmt":"2026-05-11T19:02:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/108905\/"},"modified":"2026-05-11T19:02:24","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T19:02:24","slug":"eu-foreign-ministers-approve-sanctions-on-violent-israeli-settlers-hamas-leaders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/108905\/","title":{"rendered":"EU foreign ministers approve sanctions on violent Israeli settlers, Hamas leaders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The European Union approved on Monday sanctions against Israeli settler organizations and their leaders, as well as against Hamas leaders.<\/p>\n<p>The decision, made during a meeting of the 27 EU foreign ministers in Brussels, is only a political moved at this point, and there is still technical and legal work that must be done before the sanctions are officially imposed by the EU executive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was high time we move from deadlock to delivery,\u201d said EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. \u201cExtremisms [sic] and violence carry consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s done. The European Union is sanctioning today the main Israeli organizations guilty of supporting the extremist and violent colonization of the West Bank, as well as their leaders,\u201d French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot wrote on X.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese most serious and intolerable acts must cease without delay,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is sanctioning the main leaders of Hamas, responsible for the worst antisemitic massacre in our history since the Shoah, during which 51 French people lost their lives, a terrorist movement that must imperatively be disarmed and excluded from any participation in the future of Palestine,\u201d Barrot added, using the Hebrew term to describe the Holocaust.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tGet The Times of Israel&#8217;s Daily Edition<br \/>\n\t\t\tby email and never miss our top stories\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tBy signing up, you agree to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/terms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terms<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The move, which comes in response to rising violence by extremist Israelis in the West Bank and the expansion of Israeli communities in the disputed territory, had been stalled by former Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban.<\/p>\n<p>But the ouster of Orban, a staunch ally of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, by rival Peter Magyar appeared to have paved the way for the veto to be lifted.<\/p>\n<p>Monday\u2019s move \u201cvalidates the notion that Orban was blocking them single-handedly,\u201d said Martin Kone\u010dn\u00fd, head of the Brussels-based European Middle East Project.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3819760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/AP26129478639282-e1778338000233-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tPeter Magyar takes the oath as Hungary\u2019s prime minister during a ceremony in Budapest, Hungary, May 9, 2026. The individuals will have assets frozen and be banned from entering the EU, among other measures.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Peace Now NGO, sanctions will be leveled against Regavim and its head Meir Deutsch; HaShomer Judea and Samaria and its former chief Avichai Suissa; Nachala and its head, settler leader Daniella Weiss; and the Amana settlement organization.<\/p>\n<p>Weiss, often regarded as the godmother of the Israeli settler movement, said she had received no formal notification of the sanctions and told The Associated Press that she did not understand the justification for them.<\/p>\n<p>She described the sanctions as \u201cridiculous\u201d and the situation as \u201cbanal,\u201d saying that it would not stop the movement.<\/p>\n<p>Regavim said the group considers it \u201ca badge of honor\u201d to be sanctioned by the EU and would \u201ccontinue working to restore governance and sovereignty throughout all parts of our homeland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3610251\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/AFP__20250730__68BW8WJ__v2__HighRes__IsraelPalestinianConflict-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tIsraeli far-right activist and founder of the Nachala settler organization Daniella Weiss at a hill overlooking the Gaza Strip near the border fence ahead of a right-wing rally on July 30, 2025. (Menahem KAHANA \/ AFP)<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/eu-sanctions-gaza-anti-aid-group-far-right-activists-including-gopstein-and-marzel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the EU announced sanctions<\/a> on Israeli far-right activists and organizations in the West Bank, targeting five individuals, two illegal outposts, and one organization.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u2018Distorted moral equivalence\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The decision was roundly condemned by Israeli officials and politicians.<\/p>\n<p>Israel \u201cfirmly rejects\u201d the decision, Foreign Minister Gideon Sa\u2019ar said on X, saying that the EU imposed sanctions \u201cin an arbitrary and political manner\u2026 because of their political views and without any basis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEqually outrageous is the unacceptable comparison the European Union has chosen to make between Israeli citizens and Hamas terrorists,\u201d he continued. \u201cThis is a completely distorted moral equivalence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3758146\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/AFP__20260219__988Z9YK__v1__HighRes__UsPoliticsDiplomacyTrump-e1771523668517-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tForeign Minister Gideon Sa\u2019ar attends the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace hosted by US President Donald Trump at the US Institute of Peace in Washington, DC, on February 19, 2026. (SAUL LOEB \/ AFP)<\/p>\n<p>An EU official told The Times of Israel that the decision on Hamas sanctions was not made on the same day to draw any sort of comparison, but was rather a condition by some member states for their support for sanctions on settlers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIsrael has stood, stands, and will continue to stand for the right of Jews to settle in the heart of our homeland,\u201d Sa\u2019ar said. \u201cNo other people in the world has such a documented and longstanding right to its land as the Jewish people have to the Land of Israel. (Kobi Gideon \/ GPO)<\/p>\n<p>Former prime minister Naftali Bennett, who is running to replace Netanyahu in the upcoming elections, called the sanctions \u201ca dangerous action against the State of Israel as a whole,\u201d while blaming the current government for Israel\u2019s diplomatic isolation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis stems, among other things, from a chain of harmful and childish statements and videos by government ministers, a complete absence of a public diplomacy apparatus, and an active invitation to foreign entities to impose sanctions on Israeli public servants for political ends,\u201d Bennett wrote on X. \u201cWhen you call on President Trump to impose sanctions on Israeli judges, you gravely undermine Israeli sovereignty, and it comes back like a boomerang.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3820957\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/nur-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tA general view of the West Bank settlement of Sa-Nur on May 7, 2026. (Ilia Yefimovich\/AFP)<\/p>\n<p>Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a dedicated backer of the settlement enterprise, said in a statement that \u201cEuropean hypocrisy is reaching new heights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He called for Netanyahu to approve his plan to put strategic areas of the West Bank under full Israeli civil and military control.<\/p>\n<p>Growing violence, growing frustration<\/p>\n<p>The EU\u2019s highly critical attitude toward Israel over its conduct of the war in Gaza reached a new nadir after Israel invaded Lebanon in March \u2014 in response to the Iran-backed Hezbollah terror group\u2019s attacks on Israel \u2014 and after the Knesset passed a new law on the death penalty for Palestinian terror convicts in the West Bank.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, several EU states rejected a push by Spain, Slovenia, and Ireland to suspend the bloc\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/germany-and-italy-reject-push-by-eu-allies-to-end-association-deal-with-israel\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> cooperation agreement<\/a> with Israel.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3816390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/F260501WH01-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tPalestinians inspect a burned vehicle following an attack by Israeli extremist settlers in the Wadi Rahim area of Hebron in the West Bank, May 1, 2026. Arrests in such cases are rare, and convictions are even less common, though the attacks take place on a near-daily basis.<\/p>\n<p>Critics accuse the government of turning a blind eye to the violent attacks, which have become increasingly common and deadly in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>The IDF has also faced criticism for often standing by while attacks unfold \u2014 with troops sometimes actively participating \u2014 or failing to prosecute those responsible.<\/p>\n<p>IDF Central Command chief Maj. Gen. Avi Bluth recently warned about the phenomenon, which he called out as \u201cJewish terrorism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen.
