{"id":108991,"date":"2026-05-11T20:10:32","date_gmt":"2026-05-11T20:10:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/108991\/"},"modified":"2026-05-11T20:10:32","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T20:10:32","slug":"israel-not-short-of-missile-interceptors-insists-chair-of-rafael-defense-firm-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/108991\/","title":{"rendered":"Israel not short of missile interceptors, insists chair of Rafael defense firm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yuval Steinitz, chair of Israel\u2019s state-owned defense firm Rafael, said Monday that the country is not facing a shortage of missile interceptors, amid reports that air defense stockpiles \u2013 particularly of long-range Arrow interceptors \u2013 have been depleted by the fighting with Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Israel has consistently denied claims that it is running low on interceptors.<\/p>\n<p>Rafael Advanced Defense Systems is the primary manufacturer of the Iron Dome missile defense system and produces some components for the Arrow system, though the Arrow interceptors themselves are manufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries.<\/p>\n<p>Steinetz is a former Knesset member for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s Likud party, and has held several ministerial positions over the years, including leading the Strategic Affairs, Finance and Intelligence ministries.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking Monday at a Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Affairs conference, Steinitz claimed that the Iron Dome system has been 99 percent effective against rockets fired by Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tGet The Times of Israel&#8217;s Daily Edition<br \/>\n\t\t\tby email and never miss our top stories\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tBy signing up, you agree to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/terms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terms<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIron Dome intercepted most of them with success rates that [are] not 100% but close to 100%. (Tomer Neuberg\/Flash90)<\/p>\n<p>Steinitz also said that since Hamas\u2019s October 7, 2023, onslaught, which sparked a multifront war, the two terror groups have launched some 40,000 rockets at Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Iran, he said, has fired about 1,500 ballistic missiles at Israel in two rounds of fighting since 2024 and \u201conly several dozen\u201d were not intercepted.<\/p>\n<p>During the latest war, 21 Israeli civilians and foreign nationals were killed in Israel by Iranian ballistic missiles, along with four Palestinians in the West Bank. Iranian fire during the June 2025 conflict killed 32 people and wounded over 3,000 in Israel, according to health officials and hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>The threat of Iran\u2019s ballistic missiles \u201cremains significant,\u201d but has \u201cbeen severely damaged,\u201d Steinitz said, according to Hebrew media reports, adding that current estimates put the number of Iranian missiles capable of reaching Israel at \u201c700 to 1,000,\u201d compared to the more than 3,000 the Islamic Republic had before the war.<\/p>\n<p>He also said that if Israel and the US were to resume full-scale attacks on Iran\u2019s missile sites, \u201cit will be possible to erode the remaining stockpile.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The figures claimed by Steinitz were more bullish than a recent US <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/cia-believes-iran-can-withstand-us-blockade-for-2-4-months-report\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">assessment,<\/a> which said that Iran has managed to retain 70% of its missiles and 75% of its mobile missile launchers after the US and Israeli strikes on its facilities. It also said that the underground storage facilities have reportedly been restored and reopened over the past month of the ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>Steinitz did not elaborate on Israel\u2019s current interceptor stockpiles or rate of production.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Pic-8.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3588920\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Pic-8-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tAn Arrow anti-missile system fires an interceptor missile during Israel\u2019s 12-day conflict with Iran, in an image cleared for publication on July 1, 2025. (Defense Ministry)<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Israel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/israel-ramps-up-arrow-interceptor-production-amid-reports-of-depleted-stockpile\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">approved plans<\/a> to dramatically accelerate production of Arrow interceptor missiles, days before a ceasefire with Iran was announced. That move came weeks before<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/government-said-to-have-refused-to-increase-air-defense-funds-after-2024-iranian-attacks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0an investigation<\/a> by Channel 12 reported that Netanyahu\u2019s government repeatedly opted not to increase funding for Arrow 3 interceptor missiles in recent years, despite rising tensions with Iran and multiple large-scale ballistic missile attacks.<\/p>\n<p>Israel has a multi-layered air defense array, with a variety of systems intercepting threats at different altitudes. The Arrow 3 is Israel\u2019s most advanced long-range defense system, meant to intercept ballistic missiles \u2014 like the type fired from Iran \u2014 while they are still outside the Earth\u2019s atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>A single Arrow 3 missile has an estimated price of $2-3 million and takes a few months to produce, although the exact time frame has not been made public by Israel due to security concerns.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2026\/03\/AP26083584950045-e1775896652469.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3786681\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/AP26083584950045-e1775896652469-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tIran\u2019s domestically built missiles and satellite carriers are displayed in a permanent exhibition at a recreational area in northern Tehran, Iran, March 24, 2026.
