\u201cThere\u2019s a synagogue here. This is clearly a [predominantly] Jewish neighborhood, and they deserve the right to worship in peace,\u201d counterprotester Kasondra Watkins said.<\/p>\n
The protests come as the City Council weighs whether to override Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s veto of an education \u201cbuffer zone\u201d bill.<\/p>\n
A separate bill establishing \u201cbuffer zones\u201d around houses of worship was not vetoed.<\/p>\n
Some argue that the restrictions would go too far.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think these buffer zones are an infringement on our constitutionally protected speech,\u201d Dahleh said.<\/p>\n
And while protesters say demonstrations like this are protected speech, some neighbors say bringing this fight into the middle of Midwood is creating unnecessary fear and tension in the community.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf they want to protest, there\u2019s no problem with protesting.
