{"id":111263,"date":"2026-05-13T05:31:11","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T05:31:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/111263\/"},"modified":"2026-05-13T05:31:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T05:31:11","slug":"would-a-new-labour-leader-be-more-hostile-to-us-war-in-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/111263\/","title":{"rendered":"Would a new Labour leader be more hostile to US war in Iran?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-0-OJKLYNLDWVAQ5EM6ONFE6O257U\">With pressure growing on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/uk\">British <\/a>Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/keir-starmer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/keir-starmer\">Keir Starmer<\/a> to resign following local election losses, one of the questions raised is whether a new Labour leader would take a more hostile position against the US if it resumes attacks on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/iran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/iran\">Iran<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-1-TWAJ4KISQ5EHTHH3CUHK7DH7N4\">Mr Starmer has so far refused to step down after Labour lost a large number of English council seats to the right-wing English nationalist populist party Reform and left-wing Greens. Anti-war sentiment and rising energy prices appeared to split the Labour vote. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-4-XGXT3HTCKZDKTK2SDBP5QP6E6I\">But it is still possible that he could bow to pressure on MPs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-5-XRVL7LIQU5ALRMSE64H6HUFS64\">A new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/labour-party\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/labour-party\/\">Labour <\/a>leader was unlikely to shift the government&#8217;s position on Iran but could be \u201cslightly\u201d more critical of Israel, according to Chris Doyle, of the Council of Arab British Understanding. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-6-TQP47BDQW5F5FA6QONZY3LEW54\">\u201cThere is unlikely to be a change of position on Iran. It was broadly seen among Labour MPs and the country as a right decision not to join in. I don\u2019t see a mood to alter that position,\u201d he told The National.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-8-UC6C7Q64VJB7RFHS4WFPQ5MCKI\">The UK allowed the US to use its airbases in the Middle East to protect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/gulf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/gulf\">Gulf <\/a>allies who came under attack from Tehran after US and Israeli strikes on Iran. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-9-2Z6N5GYH25DQ7M2P6DNMIFGGXI\">But Mr Starmer said his government would not be drawn into the war and has instead sought a coalition to protect international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-10-MZDCMZCANNEIVFORD3JJ5GB7SM\">This strained the UK&#8217;s relationship with the Trump administration \u2013 but was widely approved by the British public. \u201cThere is consensus that Starmer got it right,\u201d Mr Doyle said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-11-S6CRTABK2FEIPGQNAHJHKZUUSE\">While Mr Starmer has taken strong foreign policy positions including on Ukraine and the recognition of Palestine, there are concerns that contenders would not have the same track record on world affairs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-12-QKOHRVSNTZD57FTZHGJ6LBFAJE\">Contenders such as Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham and former deputy prime minister Angela Rayner are to the left of the party, raising prospects that a new leader could a take more openly hostile stance to the resumption of US strikes on Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-13-HUOL3OKNM5EVDGNVLYQ2YUDFUQ\">Mr Doyle said any future leader would seize the \u201cchance to reset\u201d the relationship with Mr Trump, but without compromising on the UK&#8217;s position. \u201cIt wouldn&#8217;t be at the cost of joining the resumption of war,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-14-6BJ2EFCO2VGGLDVIDUFXLTNUIE\">Ipsos polling in March found a majority of voters of Labour (67 per cent), Conservative (52 per cent), Liberal Democrat (69 per cent) and other parties (76 per cent) in 2024 disapproved of US military strikes on Iran, but while more than half of Reform UK 2024 voters approve of US strikes (53 per cent).<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-16-JSGNH67HMZF5XIWXM66YSST5CU\">One option for potential contenders would be to pursue greater links with the EU, as Mr Starmer has done, in a bid to win voter&#8217;s back, Mr Doyle said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-17-B4SCDAWYVRCHHLXHNUBMZZA4JY\">It is possible that a new leader would adopt a \u201cslightly more critical position\u201d to Israel, with the option of imposing further sanctions on Israeli settlers in line with the EU\u2019s decision this week, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-18-GXWFJUUWVBCKPAHVQUCHHWBLTA\">Mr Starmer\u2019s initial support for Israel\u2019s military campaign in Gaza in the months following the October 7 Hamas attacks triggered backlash from Labour supporters, in particular the party\u2019s Muslim voters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-19-YRMQXYX2BRARDL3LLMJJ57E3XM\">The Gaza issue proved persistent in this month\u2019s local elections, with the Greens and pro-Gaza independents securing more votes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-20-NB2Y2AVKW5CUVFLI4O4DP4CZKA\">But while Israel-Palestine is viewed by experts as the catalyst for the move away from Labour, it is not the sole reason for left wing frustrations with the party. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-21-QHVVX4ZQQNAVRDGMULSACYTISI\">\u201cIt won\u2019t be one issue that buys voters back. You have to establish a new mood of optimism. People want real change,\u201d Mr Doyle said. \u201cWhoever leads will have to address economic issues, where there are huge challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" _id=\"CAHGNSUHJJEN3ACZQWM3V7TO3Q\" type=\"image\" originalheight=\"1080\" alt=\"\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"low\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/CAHGNSUHJJEN3ACZQWM3V7TO3Q.png\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\"\/>Hormuz fallout<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-24-ACALRVA45ZEAHK2UISX53RAOLY\">Labour\u2019s core members, who elect the leader, were found to hold stronger views on taxation and public spending than non-members who voted for the party at the 2024 general election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-25-U2C5HSB2C5DCTH6TPZ45ANNTOM\">In a survey of Labour members conducted just after those elections, 89 per cent said they favoured an increase in taxes and public spending.
