Pollutants including heavy metals, oils, and chemical waste could<br \/>\naccumulate in the Euphrates, harming biodiversity, causing fish deaths, and<br \/>\ndegrading surrounding ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p>Unregulated industrial activity could<br \/>\nincrease thermal and chemical pollution in the river, negatively affecting<br \/>\nhuman health through the use of contaminated water for irrigation and drinking,<br \/>\nhe added, while continued violations without effective oversight could \u201cdeepen<br \/>\nenvironmental pressures\u201d through soil erosion, lower agricultural productivity,<br \/>\nand deteriorating water quality.<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, a study by researchers from<br \/>\nthe University of Al-Anbar also found biological oxygen demand (BOD5) levels in<br \/>\nthe Euphrates near Al-Khalidiya exceeded permissible limits, associating the<br \/>\ndeterioration with sewage, industrial, and agricultural pollution sources.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/shafaq.com\/en\/Report\/Pollution-gnaws-at-Iraq-Laws-without-teeth-fines-without-impact\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Read more: Pollution gnaws at Iraq: Laws without teeth, fines without impact<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1778652431120.webp\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The warnings come as Iraq faces one<br \/>\nof its worst water crises in decades.
