It\u2019s being adopted across the professional sphere, and threatening to replace large swaths of workers. It\u2019s appeared in classrooms, doctor\u2019s offices, and in Hollywood. And AI-generated content has penetrated your Facebook, <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/facebook\/\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/facebook\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Instagram<\/a>, and TikTok feeds.<\/p>\n<p>But even as AI weaves its way into the everyday, it\u2019s failed to win over most Americans. That\u2019s according to a new <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/27777984-nbc-news-march-2026-poll-03-08-2024-release-final\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/27777984-nbc-news-march-2026-poll-03-08-2024-release-final\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NBC News poll<\/a>. The survey of 1,000 registered voters between Feb. 27 and March 3 found that just 26% had a positive view of AI, while 46% had a negative view. Those dismal numbers are third worst, trailing only the Democratic Party, which had a 22-point net negative rating, and Iran, with a 53-point net negative.<\/p>\n<p>That low favorability comes as about 56% of Americans today say they use AI tools, according to a <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/how-are-americans-using-ai-evidence-from-a-nationwide-survey\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/how-are-americans-using-ai-evidence-from-a-nationwide-survey\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brookings survey<\/a>. And big tech companies are piling billions of dollars into the AI buildout, contributing up to $700 billion in capital expenditures, investments which <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/02\/06\/what-is-a-data-center-capex-spending-630-billion-dollars-amazon-microsoft-google-meta\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/02\/06\/what-is-a-data-center-capex-spending-630-billion-dollars-amazon-microsoft-google-meta\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rival the GDP<\/a> of some developed countries. <\/p>\n<p>While the technology has the potential to radically transform society, with some leaders viewing it as a cure-all that could boost productivity, bolster innovation, and even <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/04\/03\/recursion-pharmaceuticals-ai-drug-discovery\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/04\/03\/recursion-pharmaceuticals-ai-drug-discovery\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cure cancer<\/a>, the very scale of that transformation has also made many Americans wary of its potential.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the rush of data center construction to support increased AI use has been met with a \u201c<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/12\/16\/ai-data-center-backlash-republican-strongholds\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/12\/16\/ai-data-center-backlash-republican-strongholds\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">not in my backyard<\/a>\u201d backlash, and AI\u2019s increased electricity demand has <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/02\/13\/middle-class-americans-paying-for-data-center-ai-boom-higher-electric-bills-food-costs-goldman-sachs\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/02\/13\/middle-class-americans-paying-for-data-center-ai-boom-higher-electric-bills-food-costs-goldman-sachs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spiked<\/a> Americans\u2019 utility bills.<\/p>\n<p><img data-cy=\"article-image\" alt=\"nbc news survey\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"transition-opacity duration-300 lazyload wp-image-4435955 not-prose w-full\" style=\"color:transparent;background-size:cover;background-position:50% 50%;background-repeat:no-repeat;background-image:url(&quot;data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg' viewBox='0 0 1024 683'%3E%3Cfilter id='b' color-interpolation-filters='sRGB'%3E%3CfeGaussianBlur stdDeviation='20'\/%3E%3CfeColorMatrix values='1 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 100 -1' result='s'\/%3E%3CfeFlood x='0' y='0' width='100%25' height='100%25'\/%3E%3CfeComposite operator='out' in='s'\/%3E%3CfeComposite in2='SourceGraphic'\/%3E%3CfeGaussianBlur stdDeviation='20'\/%3E%3C\/filter%3E%3Cimage width='100%25' height='100%25' x='0' y='0' preserveAspectRatio='none' style='filter: url(%23b);' href='data:image\/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAEAAAABCAQAAAC1HAwCAAAAC0lEQVR4nGNgYAAAAAMAASsJTYQAAAAASUVORK5CYII='\/%3E%3C\/svg%3E&quot;)\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/NBC-2.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p>March 2026 NBC News Survey\/Hart Research Associates\/Public Opinion Strategies<\/p>\n<p>The Democrats\u2019 abysmal numbers<\/p>\n<p>Still, AI\u2019s numbers are better than the Democratic Party\u2019s. A 52% majority of those surveyed have a negative view of Democrats, with just 30% saying they have a favorable view. The party has faced a reckoning since its disappointing defeat in the 2024 presidential election, triggering internal conflict and constant finger-pointing. Political post-mortem after post-mortem has deepened a cold war between progressives and moderates, fueling ongoing debates over President Joe Biden\u2019s handling of the Gaza war, <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/02\/10\/gallup-poll-american-optimism-inflation-joe-biden-donald-trump-democrats-republicans\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/02\/10\/gallup-poll-american-optimism-inflation-joe-biden-donald-trump-democrats-republicans\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">inflation<\/a>, and the cost of living.<\/p>\n<p>The Republican Party has similarly bleak numbers, with 51% of respondents expressing an unfavorable view. But more respondents, 37%, said they had a positive view of the party, compared to just 30% saying the same for the Democratic Party. That puts Republicans at a 14-point net-negative view.<\/p>\n<p>And even as 56% of Americans oppose the war in Iran according to a <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/maristpoll.marist.edu\/polls\/war-with-iran-march-2026\/\" href=\"https:\/\/maristpoll.marist.edu\/polls\/war-with-iran-march-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marist poll<\/a>, 61% have a negative view of the country. Just 8% say they have a positive view.<\/p>\n<p>A powerful technology with bad PR<\/p>\n<p>Still, Americans like AI less than even some of the most controversial organizations and political figures, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement and President Donald Trump. ICE, which is enforcing Trump\u2019s wide-spanning deportation operation, has an 18-point net negative view among registered voters. Thirty-eight percent have a favorable view of the agency, while 56% have a negative view. Just 41% have a positive view of Trump, with 53% holding a negative view. That\u2019s a 12-point net negative view.<\/p>\n<p>The only two figures with favorability numbers above water are Pope Leo XIV, with a 34-point net positive favorability, and comedian Stephen Colbert, with a 10-point net favorability.<\/p>\n<p>AI has faced pushback across industries. In 2023, Hollywood screenwriters and actors <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/09\/05\/hollywood-strikes-economic-impact-jobs-warner-bros-discovery\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/09\/05\/hollywood-strikes-economic-impact-jobs-warner-bros-discovery\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">staged<\/a> one of the longest strikes in history out of fears that AI would one day replace them. A year later, California nurses <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/healthjournalism.org\/blog\/2024\/08\/california-nurses-protest-untested-ai-as-it-proliferates-in-health-care\/\" href=\"https:\/\/healthjournalism.org\/blog\/2024\/08\/california-nurses-protest-untested-ai-as-it-proliferates-in-health-care\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">went on strike<\/a> to protest \u201cuntested\u201d AI as hospitals and health care professionals moved to adopt the technology.<\/p>\n<p>A wave of predictions on the technology\u2019s impact on the job market has given Americans fresh reason to criticize its development. A recent <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/03\/06\/ai-job-losses-report-anthropic-research-great-recession-for-white-collar-workers\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/03\/06\/ai-job-losses-report-anthropic-research-great-recession-for-white-collar-workers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anthropic economic report<\/a> found AI is already theoretically capable of replacing a majority of tasks associated with business, finance, coding, and law. Such warnings have contributed to widespread angst amongst Americans. A February <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.verasight.io\/reports\/ai-adoption-in-2026?#form\" href=\"https:\/\/www.verasight.io\/reports\/ai-adoption-in-2026?#form\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">poll<\/a> from research firm Verasight found 56% remain anxious about AI\u2019s rise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil companies and institutions building AI systems can address fundamental concerns about trustworthiness, privacy, and social responsibility,\u201d the poll\u2019s authors wrote, \u201cAmericans will remain trapped between enthusiasm and anxiety, using AI while quietly wondering if they should.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Artificial intelligence has permeated nearly every part of daily American life.
