(U.S. Central Command)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If they run their diesel engines to snorkel and recharge batteries, that could generate sound that could be detected,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lowyinstitute.org\/people\/contributor\/bio\/thomas-shugart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Shugart<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Their snorkel mast projecting from the water could be detected by radars on patrol aircraft or helicopters,&#8221; Shugart added.<\/p>\n<p>The submarines are said to be designed for shallow waters like the Strait of Hormuz and can operate quietly for limited periods on battery power.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While they may be able to sit on the bottom for a while and operate somewhat quietly on their batteries for a while, they have no air-independent propulsion system (AIP) like more modern diesel-electric submarines,&#8221; Shugart said before adding that they\u2019ll, &#8220;eventually have to come up and snorkel. (Sahar Al Attar \/ AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>The IRGC Navy is said to be the sole operator of this class of submarine, all of which serve in the Southern Fleet.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Any remaining Ghadirs, if they exist and are actually deployed, may be able to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/us-turns-drones-after-retiring-minesweepers-reopen-strait-hormuz-amid-iran-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">lay mines<\/a> and may be able to threaten merchant ships,&#8221; Shugart warned.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But I don\u2019t see them as a serious threat to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/us-destroys-16-iranian-mine-boats-strait-hormuz-oil-showdown-escalates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">U.S. Navy warships<\/a> \u2014 and certainly not to U.S. submarines,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But I can say for sure that I wouldn\u2019t want to go out on one in the current environment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/hormuz-choke-point-persists-iran-halts-oil-traffic-despite-trump-ceasefire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">HORMUZ CHOKE POINT PERSISTS AS IRAN HALTS OIL TRAFFIC DESPITE TRUMP CEASEFIRE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Navy confirmed May 10 that a U.S. Navy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usff.navy.mil\/Press-Room\/News-Stories\/Article\/4483090\/a-us-navy-ballistic-missile-submarine-arrived-in-gibraltar-may-10-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ohio-class nuclear-armed submarine<\/a> had arrived in Gibraltar.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The port visit demonstrates U.S. capability, flexibility and continuing commitment to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/world\/nato\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">NATO<\/a> allies,&#8221; U.S. Sixth Fleet Public Affairs said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c6f.navy.mil\/Press-Room\/News\/Article\/4482914\/a-us-navy-ballistic-missile-submarine-arrived-in-gibraltar-may-10-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines are undetectable launch platforms for submarine-launched ballistic missiles, providing the U.S. with its most survivable leg of the nuclear triad,&#8221; it added.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/foxnews.onelink.me\/xLDS?pid=AppArticleLink&amp;af_dp=foxnewsaf%3A%2F%2F&amp;af_web_dp=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.foxnews.com%2Fapps-products\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE FOX NEWS APP<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Shugart\u2019s remarks came as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/irans-remaining-weapons-how-tehran-can-still-disrupt-strait-hormuz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed<\/a>, with commercial tanker traffic largely choked off amid ongoing military activity and the continued U.S. blockade of Iranian ports.<\/p>\n<p>The United Arab Emirates and South Korea reported new strikes on stranded vessels Wednesday, while the IRGC increased its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/us-eyes-iran-fast-boats-kill-tactics-tested-venezuela-drug-boat-strikes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">fast-attack craft activity<\/a>, according to reports.<\/p>\n<p>President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/person\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Donald Trump<\/a> has maintained Iran\u2019s navy is &#8220;completely obliterated.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Pentagon did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Emma Bussey is a breaking news writer for Fox News Digital.
