{"id":113829,"date":"2026-05-14T16:01:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T16:01:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/113829\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T16:01:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T16:01:08","slug":"un-chief-calls-on-israel-to-abolish-oct-7-military-tribunal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/113829\/","title":{"rendered":"UN chief calls on Israel to abolish Oct 7 military tribunal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The United Nations rights chief on Wednesday called on Israel to repeal a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newarab.com\/news\/how-israels-7-october-law-differs-ben-gvirs-death-penalty\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> newly established special military tribunal to try Palestinians accused<\/a> of taking part in Hamas&#8217;s October 7 attacks.<\/p>\n<p>Israel&#8217;s parliament passed a law establishing the tribunal, with the authority to hand down the death penalty, late on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The special court is set to try suspects allegedly captured during or after the Hamas-led onslaught. It will also try those accused of holding or abusing hostages in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>According to Israeli media, around 400 suspects are expected to stand trial before the court.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There must be full accountability for these horrific attacks, but this cannot be achieved through trials that fall short of international standards,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newarab.com\/news\/sudanese-put-through-hell-advanced-weapons-fuel-war-turk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Volker Turk<\/a>, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This law must be overturned.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This law will inevitably institutionalise one-sided justice and discrimination against Palestinians, which cannot be in anyone&#8217;s interest and runs counter to international human rights law.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Israel&#8217;s diplomatic mission in Geneva said Turk&#8217;s office should concentrate on categorising Hamas as a terrorist group and &#8220;cease blaming Israel for seeking justice for victims&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The mission said Israel was using a military court because of the &#8220;nature and magnitude of the offences&#8221; and the volume of evidence.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The law does not alter substantive criminal law, create new offences or penalties, establish retroactive criminal liability, or impose a mandatory death sentence,&#8221; the mission said.<\/p>\n<p>Hamas&#8217;s attack resulted in the deaths of 1,221 people on the Israeli side, the majority of them civilians, according to Israeli data.<\/p>\n<p>Militants also took 251 people hostage, including 44 who were already dead.<\/p>\n<p>Israel&#8217;s retaliatory military campaign has devastated the Gaza Strip and killed more than 72,000 people, according to the health ministry in the Palestinian territory.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The United Nations rights chief on Wednesday called on Israel to repeal a newly established special military tribunal&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":113830,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[33],"tags":[5656,37,30517,1243],"class_list":{"0":"post-113829","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-israel","8":"tag-gaza-war","9":"tag-israel","10":"tag-israeli-government","11":"tag-united-nations"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@iran\/116573771081216223","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/113829","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=113829"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/113829\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/113830"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=113829"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=113829"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=113829"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
