Thus, its attitude of solidarity with the countries of the Persian Gulf – as well as Jordan – attacked by Tehran has highlighted Morocco’s international empowerment within the Arab League, the African Union (especially in the Maghreb and the difficult Sahel), and the UN (which includes us), that is, the global forums where its highly skilled diplomacy operates, in accordance with the measured foreign policy directed by its Alawite monarch.

King Mohammed VI of Morocco – PHOTO/MAP

Morocco – including its Sahrawi populations living in the Southern Provinces – could not appear indifferent, and the attitude of Mohamed VI’s state is reminiscent of the pan-Arabism of the mid-20th century, in the strict sense of closing ranks with sister nations, that is, those of the same blood and culture.

On the other side of the field lies Algeria, Morocco’s neighbour, unable to make any passes and, worse still, receiving none from anyone, dramatically forgotten or ignored. The Algerian regime should evaluate its attitude in the negotiations that will continue unabated on the Moroccan Sahara, warned that it has no power to impose conditions at the table.

Russia and China, its allies of the past, are watching the war from afar or from the sidelines – North Korea is vociferous on Beijing’s instructions – because they have their own priorities – Russia, the outcome of the war with Ukraine, and China, its unstoppable economic growth – and knowing that US military power deters them, they are acting as they did with Venezuela.

Algeria must be looking at itself in the mirror of the decimated regime of the ayatollahs, forced to stop moving on the Sahara negotiations field, alone and reluctantly.

Miguel Ángel Rodríguez Mackay.
