That is what many are wondering after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/technology\/2025\/07\/14\/gaza-accusations-at-centre-of-microsoft-shareholder-resolution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/technology\/2025\/07\/14\/gaza-accusations-at-centre-of-microsoft-shareholder-resolution\/\">Microsoft<\/a>&#8216;s announcement that its general manager in Israel would be leaving the company. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-1-LRWDXQR7MBEXLN4PPBG6GXIY2A\">In a blog post titled \u201cIsrael Subsidiary Leadership Changes\u201d late last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/technology\/2025\/05\/16\/microsoft-gaza-israel-protests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/technology\/2025\/05\/16\/microsoft-gaza-israel-protests\/\">Microsoft<\/a> said that Alon Haimovich would be &#8220;stepping down&#8221; at the end of the month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-4-KYWCZLOBOZBH5CJVMLI5DPDTGU\">&#8220;During his tenure, Microsoft Israel became one of the three fastest-growing countries within its peer countries cluster across the company, achieved a number of standout milestones and drove a shift toward Frontier AI leadership,&#8221; the company&#8217;s statement read. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-5-DTYQUGHHHBCNFCRAKR5D3LZEAM\">Yet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/technology\/2025\/08\/27\/microsoft-occupied-palestine-brad-smith\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/technology\/2025\/08\/27\/microsoft-occupied-palestine-brad-smith\/\">No Azure for Apartheid (Noaa)<\/a>, a group founded by former Microsoft employees that has campaigned against the company&#8217;s contracts with Israel, said the company was trying to sweep its actions under the rug. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-6-47YLQMPXT5GVTCBN2E7U5LZFJM\">&#8220;Microsoft has tried to quietly say goodbye to war criminal Alon Haimovich, who oversaw the development of Azure tools for the Israeli military, which helped accelerate the first AI-powered genocide,&#8221; a statement from Noaa read. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-8-5AU3VBYIOJHIBGOKAQ2Q42W7RM\">Noaa&#8217;s emailed statement linked to various stories sourcing an 2025 investigation by The Guardian and +972 Magazine. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-9-RQYENQRCJVGKXGZJWAQRS3AOTA\">That report led to Microsoft carrying out internal reviews, which found that Israel&#8217;s military and intelligence agency had breached Microsoft&#8217;s terms of use agreement and used the company&#8217;s software to collect millions of civilian phone calls in Gaza and the West Bank, among other things. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-10-EVXFWXKPENDZ5GGLLVWZK4FEZI\">Microsoft&#8217;s findings led to it disabling several services it previously allowed Israel&#8217;s military to use. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-12-GXXOBOUINRBODJCQTEEQSAK2NU\">A report last week in The Guardian alleged that Microsoft&#8217;s announcement of Mr Haimovich&#8217;s departure was connected to the company&#8217;s continuing internal review of how its tools were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/technology\/2025\/10\/21\/gaza-ceasefire-digital-influence-israel-palestine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/technology\/2025\/10\/21\/gaza-ceasefire-digital-influence-israel-palestine\/\">used in Israel<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-13-N4SFXMBKIBHO5DV344OEAHJSHQ\">Other sources from Microsoft&#8217;s Israel offices were dismissed as well, the report said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-14-BSGNSTTHIFBIRFTC5CEQSDWFM4\">But Noaa said that Microsoft has not gone far enough in accepting responsibility. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-15-KYQAG5ZTDFDETORVKWURAF7WMY\">&#8220;We refuse to allow Microsoft to scapegoat one or a handful of individuals to wipe its hands clean off its complicity in genocide,&#8221; the group&#8217;s statement read.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-16-WMO4T6JVS5BSFE4RX5TTQ6RW3E\">It said the Redmond, Washington-based company should &#8220;answer the workers\u2019 demands to end this collusion and cut off all ties with the Israeli military and government immediately&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-17-BEPKRIYQIJFGLDUM2BTXNHNGNI\">Microsoft has not yet responded to The National&#8217;s request for comment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-18-YNKFHSDRFFAODNZ3OXMXK2DTDA\">Noaa first gained attention in 2025, when one of its protesters, who also was a former Microsoft employee, interrupted a corporate anniversary event and shouted at the company&#8217;s then-head of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/technology\/2025\/04\/07\/microsoft-palestine-protest-mustafa-suleyman-no-azure-for-apartheid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/technology\/2025\/04\/07\/microsoft-palestine-protest-mustafa-suleyman-no-azure-for-apartheid\/\">AI, Mustafa Suleyman<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-19-U6CYMCQMPVBLHA534YVK4PNHZU\">Videos posted on social media showed the protester shouting from the audience that Mr Suleyman was a war profiteer, and that Microsoft was complicit in Israel&#8217;s attacks on Gaza that killed tens of thousands of people. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-20-ABZ3GYXDA5BN7HIDSLRFO72I6A\">Mr Suleyman responded, \u201cThank you for your protest. I hear you, I hear your protest,\u201d while the demonstrator was escorted from the event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-21-EADMAUFALNCZFCINY7B4SL2ECU\">Hours before Mr Suleyman&#8217;s presentation, Noaa organised demonstrations throughout Microsoft&#8217;s campus, with many of the protesters criticising the company&#8217;s contracts with Israel. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-22-7FQ5THRJNJG6JG2L7N5G5HI36I\">Demonstrations popped up in the months that followed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-23-6KLK5PRNKNAMZMQSNYSLMKQRKU\">At one point, a group of protesters entered offices of Microsoft&#8217;s US executives, prompting the company&#8217;s vice chairman and president Brad Smith to give an impromptu news conference. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" type=\"image\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/media\/068oX7JP\/poster.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Microsoft birthday celebration interrupted by employee protesting use of AI by Israeli military<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-25-GADHEIYVIVGYJGEI6DXNV4XJOA\">Mr Smith addressed Microsoft&#8217;s internal investigation that \u201cfound evidence that supports elements\u201d of The Guardian&#8217;s reports. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-26-HPOW5SFGOVHK7M3ITQKUSOTUTQ\">According to Mr Haimovich&#8217;s LinkedIn profile, he joined Microsoft in Israel in 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-27-L2BCI3KA3VH67OMUKLSI43Y33U\">He is also chairman of Friends of Summit Institute, an &#8220;Israeli non-profit organisation dedicated to providing critical services for at-risk children&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-29-E7WIB2JCVZEMVLBP6HJA2XKW64\">Previously, Mr Haimovich spent 12 years at Cisco in Israel as a regional sales and a systems engineering manager. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-30-H7BGUNOWCJEBNIXEV4XAGUKS7A\">Microsoft shared the departure letter sent to his colleagues. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-31-JOGMEPGF7RA3FMRWKSOLSPQU3A\">&#8220;We accelerated cloud and AI adoption, launched local cloud infrastructure, strengthened our cybersecurity work, and reinforced Microsoft\u2019s role as the strategic platform for startups across Israel,&#8221; it read in part. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-32-E72G5QGUUFDRPGDLDF2RGZCQSE\">The National contacted Mr Haimovich for comment. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Scapegoat or simple departure?
