The discussions come as the U.S.-backed ceasefire nears its expiration on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mnnonline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/ChatGPT-Image-May-14-2026-03_06_49-PM.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-221769\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-221769\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/ChatGPT-Image-May-14-2026-03_06_49-PM-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-221769\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(AI-generated photo by ChatGPT)<\/p>\n<p>Nuna of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mnnonline.org\/mission_groups\/triumphant-mercy-lebanon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Triumphant Mercy Lebanon<\/a> says, \u201cThe peace talk is not just military; though, of course, it involves the military side, it\u2019s much more than this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As part of the peace talks, U.S. President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/middle-east\/article-896111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">is urging Lebanon\u2019s government<\/a> to repeal a 1955 law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn our Constitution, there is a [clause] that says Lebanon has no connection with Israel, so we need to change that clause,\u201d Nuna explains.<\/p>\n<p>Under that 1955 law, \u201ceverything is very, very closed, and people are not allowed to have any communication with Israelis,\u201d she continues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cWe don\u2019t have the right to have any communication \u2013 by phone, by message, anything \u2013 with anyone in Israel. [If suspected,] you have to go to Security, where they will ask you questions, take your phone, and check it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If negotiations succeed and the Lebanese government normalizes relations with Israel, Nuna says, \u201cEverything will change, not just on the political ground, but it\u2019s going to change the whole face of Lebanon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cost of peace<\/p>\n<p>Although a ceasefire has been in place since mid-April, the Iranian-backed terror group Hezbollah <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptobriefing.com\/israel-and-lebanon-begin-peace-talks-in-washington-amid-ceasefire-uncertainty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">continues to attack<\/a> Israel.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mnnonline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/mhrezaa-D4GXPGBB6qA-unsplash.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-221778\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-221778\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/mhrezaa-D4GXPGBB6qA-unsplash-300x202.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-221778\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hezbollah flag<br \/>(Photo courtesy mhrezaa\/Unsplash)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHezbollah is affiliated with Iran and wants to keep Iranian influence over Lebanon, but Lebanon is trying to get free from it. The whole contention is between these two,\u201d Nuna says.<\/p>\n<p>Lebanese people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/lebanese-split-over-diplomatic-normalisation-amid-washington-talks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">remain divided<\/a> over an alliance with Iran. Though Hezbollah represents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mnnonline.org\/news\/lebanon-seeks-u-s-pressure-on-israel-ahead-of-peace-talks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">approximately one-third<\/a> of Lebanon\u2019s population \u2013 followers of Shia Islam \u2013 representatives of other major groups seek peace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLebanon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naharnet.com\/stories\/en\/320111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">submitted an official complaint<\/a> against Iran for the first time this week. This is unprecedented,\u201d Nuna says.<\/p>\n<p>Lebanon\u2019s government is taking steps toward peace with Israel and independence from Iran \u2013 but at a cost. \u201cThe Shiite community is really strong in saying, \u2018We don\u2019t want this,\u2019\u201d Nuna says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cThe threats in the streets [are] that \u2018We\u2019re going to turn our weapons against all the people who are for the change and for the peace treaty.\u2019 It\u2019s becoming like a civil war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nuna says these threats raise an important question: \u201cDo we go through a civil war so that we can have peace, or do we forget the peace and keep the status quo in Lebanon with Hezbollah in charge?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Christian aid<\/p>\n<p>Fighting between Hezbollah and Israel has driven more than one million people from their homes in southern Lebanon. \u201cThere are so many displaced people,\u201d Nuna says.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mnnonline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/TML_war-response.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-221780\" class=\"wp-image-221780\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/TML_war-response-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"375\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-221780\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Graphic courtesy Triumphant Mercy Lebanon)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have no homes, no shelter, no food, no revenue, no work \u2013 nothing.
