The navigable section of the channel runs closer to the Kuwaiti side near Bubiyan, giving Kuwait major influence over maritime traffic moving through one of Iraq’s most economically sensitive access corridors. Iraq has opposed Kuwait’s Mubarak Al Kabeer port project for years because Baghdad fears Kuwait could dominate shipping traffic tied to Iraq’s own Grand Faw port ambitions. Before the Hormuz crisis intensified, roughly 3.2 to 3.4 million barrels per day of Iraqi crude exports moved through the broader northern Gulf operating zone tied to Basra and nearby infrastructure. Tanker traffic leaving southern Iraq moves through the same maritime area surrounding Bubiyan before entering wider Gulf shipping lanes. Military instability there directly affects tanker routing, maritime insurance costs, naval positioning, and commercial shipping tied to Iraqi exports.

Third, Bubiyan remains close to major Kuwaiti and US military infrastructure and now falls directly inside the operational geography of the broader US-Iran confrontation. Iranian state-linked reporting now openly claims the island was used during the recent war to support US strike operations against Iran.

By Editorial Dept – May 15, 2026, 6:30 AM CDT Gulf shipping, Iraqi trade access, Chinese infrastructure expansion,…

[14
39695,262,2172,34,94,424,39696,35,39697,18857
0":"post-115116","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-iraq","8":"tag-bubiyan-island","9":"tag-china","10":"tag-gulf-shipping","11":"tag-iran","12":"tag-iraq","13":"tag-irgc","14":"tag-khor-abdullah","15":"tag-kuwait","16":"tag-mubarak-al-kabeer-port","17":"tag-u-s-iran-tensions
["GET
