BEIJING (Gray DC) – President Trump concluded a two-day summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday, leaving Beijing with a vague commitment from China to pressure Iran to lift its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n
During his second meeting Friday with Xi, Trump touted what he called a successful summit that lowered tensions between the two countries.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to thank you very much. This has been an incredible visit, and I think a lot of a lot of good has come of it. We\u2019ve made some fantastic trade deals. Great for both countries. He\u2019s a man I respect greatly. Become really a fan. We\u2019ve known each other now 11 years, almost 12 years. It\u2019s a long time,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n
With Xi by his side, Trump said the U.S. and China agreed to work together to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which has been shut down since the U.S. military conflict with Iran began in late February.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe did discuss Iran. We feel very similar. Right. We want that to end, and we don\u2019t want them to have a nuclear weapon. We want the Straits open. We\u2019re closing it down. They closed it, and we closed it on top of. But we want the Straits open, and we want them to get it ended because, it\u2019s a crazy thing. They\u2019re a little bit crazy, and it\u2019s no good. Can\u2019t have it. They cannot have a nuclear weapon,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n
One area of disagreement was the future of Taiwan. While Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated that American policy toward Taiwan remains unchanged, Xi warned against a potential conflict with the U.S. over Taiwan, which China claims as its own.<\/p>\n
China agreed to buy 200 Boeing planes. Trump said China also will purchase U.S. soybeans, oil and liquified natural gas.<\/p>\n
Trump will host Xi in Washington for a state visit at the White House in late September.<\/p>\n
