(Supplied: Tommy Pigott\/X)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said the State Department would hold negotiations aimed at reaching a permanent political agreement on June 2 and 3 and that the Pentagon would bring together delegations from the countries&#8217; militaries on May 29.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The US steadfastly backs Israel, with which it attacked Iran on February 28, but has also gently voiced unease about Israeli troops&#8217; control of southern Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We hope these discussions will advance lasting peace between the two countries, full recognition of each other&#8217;s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and establishing genuine security along their shared border,&#8221;  Mr Pigott said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Israel&#8217;s ambassador to Washington, Yechiel Leiter, who led his country&#8217;s delegation, said after the talks that it would be critical to ensure Israel&#8217;s security.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-04-30\/lebanon-deputy-prime-minister-tarek-mitri-ceasefire-war-israel\/106619460\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lebanon&#8217;s deputy PM says ceasefire cannot work <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Lebanese Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri says the government cannot exercise its authority over the country while Israel continues its bombardments and occupation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There will be ups and downs, but the potential for success is great,&#8221; Mr Leiter wrote on X.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Iran&#8217;s clerical state, Hezbollah&#8217;s patron, has demanded a lasting ceasefire in Lebanon before any peace agreement with US President Donald Trump, who has been frustrated by Tehran&#8217;s refusal to an accord on his terms.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Unacceptable&#8217; toll<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Hundreds of people have died in Israeli strikes despite the truce announced on April 17.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Even as talks were wrapping up in Washington, Israel&#8217;s military issued evacuation orders for the southern city of Tyre, where it said it was hitting Hezbollah infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">An AFP correspondent reported a series of strikes, two of them near Tyre, while state media said another targeted a centre run by a local NGO near a hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Lebanon&#8217;s health ministry said the strikes on the Tyre district wounded at least 37 people, including six hospital personnel, nine women and four children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Hafez Ramadan, a resident near the building targeted by the air strike, said it had housed people who had fled their towns due to the war, and was adjacent to a hotel where more displaced were staying.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are only women, children and the elderly here,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Because of this strike, people have been displaced again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Israeli military said another of its soldiers was killed in southern Lebanon, bringing the number of Israeli soldiers killed in clashes with Hezbollah since early March to 19.
