(Mark Schiefelbein\/AP)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Instead, the two countries came to a mutual understanding of China&#8217;s reliance on Iranian fuel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Before the meeting, China&#8217;s foreign ministry issued a statement that said the country supports efforts to reach a peace deal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">China believes the conflict should have never happened and had no reason to continue, the ministry said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A foreign policy fellow at the Brookings Institution, Patricia Kim, said the meeting ended with &#8220;no Chinese commitment to do anything specific&#8221; about the war.<\/p>\n<p>No nuclear weapons for Iran<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The visit to America&#8217;s main strategic and economic rival aimed for concrete results, but fell short of doing such.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Instead, in conversations on the war, both leaders agreed that Iran should never have a nuclear weapon, according to the White House readout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Tehran has denied ever seeking such weapons.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-15\/xi-jinping-donald-trump-china-visit-thucydides-trap\/106683554\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Xi&#8217;s obscure history reference to warn Trump <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The US and China have been rivals for almost 80 years, but when the countries&#8217; leaders met in Beijing on Thursday, Xi Jinping made reference to a far more ancient feud.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Trump said he would like Iran to suspend its nuclear program for \u206020 years, but that there has to be a &#8220;real&#8221; commitment from Tehran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Twenty years is enough, but the level of \u2060guarantee from them, it&#8217;s got to be a real 20 years,&#8221; Mr Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>China turns to American oil<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In an effort to reduce China&#8217;s future dependence on the strait, Mr Xi expressed an interest in instead purchasing more American oil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Trump said he was considering whether to lift US sanctions on Chinese oil companies buying Iranian oil.
