Xi’s obscure history reference to warn Trump <\/a><\/p>\nThe US and China have been rivals for almost 80 years, but when the countries’ leaders met in Beijing on Thursday, Xi Jinping made reference to a far more ancient feud.<\/p>\n
Mr Trump said he would like Iran to suspend its nuclear program for \u206020 years, but that there has to be a “real” commitment from Tehran.<\/p>\n
“Twenty years is enough, but the level of \u2060guarantee from them, it’s got to be a real 20 years,” Mr Trump said.<\/p>\n
China turns to American oil<\/p>\n
In an effort to reduce China’s future dependence on the strait, Mr Xi expressed an interest in instead purchasing more American oil.<\/p>\n
Mr Trump said he was considering whether to lift US sanctions on Chinese oil companies buying Iranian oil. China is the biggest buyer of Iranian oil.<\/p>\n
While aboard the flight leaving Beijing, Mr Trump told reporters that the two presidents talked about the sanction and that he is “going to make a decision over the next few days”.<\/p>\n
Underwhelming Boeing deal<\/p>\n
Another sign of underwhelm from the summit was the deal touted as the biggest single deliverable being diminished.<\/p>\n
Sources told Reuters a deal for China to buy 500 Boeing jets had been under discussion, with the country on Thursday only agreeing to 200.<\/p>\n
Boeing stock fell 4 per cent when Mr Trump announced the smaller deal on Thursday.<\/p>\n
He later said that the purchase could increase to 750 planes if they do a good job with the 200.<\/p>\n

While Mr Trump spent the meeting searching for immediate business wins, such as this Boeing deal, Mr Xi talked about a pact to maintain stable trade ties with Washington.<\/p>\n
He described the relationship between their two countries as one with “constructive strategic stability”.<\/p>\n
The term is a stark change from when former US president Joe Biden termed the relationship as one of “strategic competition”.<\/p>\n
Not all business<\/p>\n
Alongside the business talks, the summit was filled with pageantry \u2014 from goose-stepping soldiers to tours of a secret garden.<\/p>\n
Mr Xi showed off centuries-old trees in the walled-off Zhongnanhai compound in the concluding hours of the summit.<\/p>\n
The compound is adjacent to the capital’s famed landmark of the Forbidden \u2060City and off Tiananmen Square.<\/p>\n
As the leaders walked through the garden, Mr Trump expressed surprise that the trees lived up to 1,000 years old, and was invited to touch a 280-year-old tree.<\/p>\n

Afterwards, Mr Trump asked Mr Xi if other foreign leaders were also received in the compound.<\/p>\n
“Very rarely,” Mr Xi answered.<\/p>\n
“At first, we usually didn’t hold diplomatic events here.<\/p>\n
“Even after we started having some, it’s \u2060still extremely rare.”<\/p>\n
Mr Xi told Mr Trump that Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously been given a tour of the garden as well.<\/p>\n
This Chinese visit was the first by a US president since Mr Trump’s last trip in 2017.<\/p>\n
Mr Xi will visit the US in autumn, at Mr Trump’s invitation, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi said.<\/p>\n
