{"id":116288,"date":"2026-05-16T07:25:21","date_gmt":"2026-05-16T07:25:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/116288\/"},"modified":"2026-05-16T07:25:21","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T07:25:21","slug":"tens-of-thousands-set-to-rally-in-london-for-concurrent-far-right-anti-israel-protests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/116288\/","title":{"rendered":"Tens of thousands set to rally in London for concurrent far-right, anti-Israel protests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>London police braced for their busiest day in years on Saturday, when tens of thousands of protesters were expected to attend two major demonstrations \u2014 the latest rally staged by far-right activist Tommy Robinson, and an anti-Israel Nakba Day demonstration.<\/p>\n<p>The British capital\u2019s Metropolitan Police said it would deploy 4,000 officers \u2014 alongside horses, dogs, drones and helicopters \u2014 to manage the two protests, as well as soccer\u2019s FA Cup final.<\/p>\n<p>The Met has imposed various conditions on the two rallies, over their routes and timings, in a bid to keep rival attendees apart.<\/p>\n<p>The force, which estimates the operation will cost \u00a34.5 million ($6 million), warned in a statement that it would adopt \u201ca zero-tolerance approach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That includes for the first time making organizers legally responsible for ensuring invited speakers do not break hate speech laws. (Toby Melville\/Pool Photo via AP)<\/p>\n<p>Starmer \u2014 facing intense pressure within his ruling Labour party to quit after hard-right Reform UK and nationalist parties scored wins in local elections last week \u2014 accused the organizers of Saturday\u2019s far-right rally of \u201cpeddling hatred and division.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir goal is to convince people that Britain\u2019s problems are caused by those living alongside them,\u201d he said in a video posted online after visiting the Met\u2019s operational control room. \u201cBut that is not the Britain that I know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some 80,000 expected<\/p>\n<p>Robinson \u2014 real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon \u2014 is a former football hooligan turned anti-Islam activist whose profile has soared in recent years, in particular online.<\/p>\n<p>Last September, he drew up to 150,000 people into central London for a similarly themed rally proclaiming \u201cnational unity, free speech and Christian values.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>X owner Elon Musk addressed that event, which shocked mainstream Britain for its scale and raw messaging, as well as clashes between some participants and police which injured dozens of officers.<\/p>\n<p>Robinson\u2019s growing appeal comes amid public anger over tens of thousands of migrants crossing the English Channel each year in small boats, wider immigration policies, alleged free speech curbs and other issues.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Untitled-9.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2123573\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Untitled-9-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tBritish far-right activist Tommy Robinson speaks during a rally in Parliament Square in London, March 29, 2019. (AP Photo\/ Frank Augstein)<\/p>\n<p>Robinson has urged his attendees not to wear masks or drink excessive alcohol, and to be \u201cpeaceful and courteous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe establishment has thrown everything in the way of us as we fight to Unite The Kingdom and the West,\u201d he said this week on X, predicting \u201cthe biggest patriotic rally to grace this planet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The two leading British communal groups \u2014 the Board of Deputies and the Jewish Leadership Council \u2014 last year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejlc.org\/news\/statement-tommy-robinson-invite\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">condemned<\/a> Robinson\u2019s attempts to align himself and his movement with the Jewish community, as well as efforts by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s hardline government, calling him a \u201cthug.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Met estimates around 50,000 of Robinson\u2019s supporters will attend on Saturday, with 30,000 people expected at the rival pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel rally marking Nakba Day.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2026\/04\/AP23314480777190.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3796714\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/AP23314480777190-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tA pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel rally in London, October 14, 2023, days after the October 7 Hamas-led onslaught.
