{"id":119408,"date":"2026-05-18T13:42:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-18T13:42:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/119408\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T13:42:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T13:42:08","slug":"jafar-panahi-to-again-face-trial-in-iran-on-propaganda-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/119408\/","title":{"rendered":"Jafar Panahi to Again Face Trial in Iran on Propaganda Charges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOscar-nominated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/jafar-panahi-cannes-interview-it-was-just-an-accident-1236221113\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iranian director Jafar Panahi <\/a>(It Was Just an Accident) is set to again face trial in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/iran\/\" id=\"auto-tag_iran_1\" data-tag=\"iran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iran<\/a> on charges of \u201cpropaganda against the regime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBranch 26 of the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Tehran has ordered a retrial in his case, after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/iran-sentences-jafar-panahi-prison-one-year-absentia-1236438268\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he was sentenced in absentia<\/a>, to one year in prison and a two-year ban from filmmaking. Panahi at the time was outside the country, promoting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/it-was-just-an-accident-review-jafar-panahi-iran-1236222539\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">It Was Just An Accident<\/a>, which won the Palme d\u2019Or in Cannes and was nominated for an Oscar in the best <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/international\/\" id=\"auto-tag_international_1\" data-tag=\"international\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">international<\/a> feature category, representing France.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAfter the Oscar ceremony, Panahi returned to Iran, as he had always said he would, entering the country on March 30. He crossed the border in the midst of the ongoing war between the U.S. and Israel and the Iranian regime. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tPanahi has been summoned for a court hearing in Iran on May 20 as part of the retrial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tPanahi spent 86 days in Iran\u2019s notorious Evin prison in 2022 and 2023 on charges of anti-government activity dating back to 2010. He was released following a hunger strike and a successful appeal that got the original charges thrown out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn prison, Panahi met activist and political prisoner Mehdi Mahmoudian and the two collaborated on the screenplay for It Was Just An Accident.  The thriller follows a former political prisoner who kidnaps a man he believes to be his torturer and then debates with other dissidents whether to kill or forgive him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMahmoudian was re-arrested earlier this year and held for 17 days on accusations of \u201cinsulting the Supreme Leader\u201d and \u201cpropaganda against the Islamic Republic.\u201d He was picked up after writing an opinion piece condemning the government\u2019s violent crackdown on protesters.
