{"id":120864,"date":"2026-05-19T08:53:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T08:53:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/120864\/"},"modified":"2026-05-19T08:53:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T08:53:12","slug":"trumps-tough-talk-foreign-policy-is-hitting-a-wall-with-iran-as-it-grips-strait-of-hormuz-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/120864\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump\u2019s tough-talk foreign policy is hitting a wall with Iran as it grips Strait of Hormuz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">WASHINGTON \u2013 President Donald Trump has considered himself an <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-transactional-diplomacy-tariffs-russia-ukraine-canada-e70f0e800b1c7891a0fa4f21a28c67af\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">effective dealmaker above all else<\/a>, but he appears to have hit a wall with Iran as his tough talk, threats and even military action have not moved Tehran from its long-established positions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">With <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-iran-objectives-one-month-1a32141f5ca2104af78625b3aa277421\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shifting goals<\/a> that make it difficult to judge the status of the U.S. effort, Trump and his top aides have insisted the United States has already won the war and that Iran is ready to reach an agreement in the wake of <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-iran-threats-civilization-war-crimes-758eb5cd680d7d275c4e1c38b2e01e6d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">escalating U.S. threats<\/a> during <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-us-israel-china-war-may-11-2026-0e9067769efea20e9d45e3d43158ad8c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a tenuous ceasefire<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">But <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-iran-ceasefire-strikes-military-984b44a42e512a4cbf8fcc5cd0d82fbe\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump once again backed down<\/a>, saying Monday that he had put plans for an imminent resumption of attacks on hold at the request of Gulf Arab states because \u201cserious negotiations are now taking place, and that, in their opinion, as Great Leaders and Allies, a Deal will be made, which will be very acceptable to the United States of America, as well as all Countries in the Middle East, and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Although he said he had called off strikes planned for Tuesday, Trump kept up the bravado, saying he told military leaders \u201cto be prepared to go forward with a full, large scale assault of Iran, on a moment\u2019s notice, in the event that an acceptable Deal is not reached.\u201d Trump has repeatedly set deadlines for Tehran and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/us-iran-war-pakistan-april-21-2026-177a2d0701ef172c3e51686bc1f18f30\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">then backed off<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Despite growing internal unrest, a crippled economy and the deaths of many of its leaders, there is <a href=\"https:\/\/google.com\/search?q=ceasefire+iran+associated+press&amp;rlz=1C1GCEA_enGB1104GB1104&amp;oq=ceasefire+iran+associated+press&amp;gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOTIICAEQABgWGB4yCAgCEAAYFhgeMg0IAxAAGIYDGIAEGIoFMg0IBBAAGIYDGIAEGIoFMgoIBRAAGIAEGKIEMgoIBhAAGIAEGKIEMgYIBxBFGDzSAQkxMjQ3MWowajeoAgCwAgA&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">no evidence Iran is set to meet Trump&#8217;s demands<\/a> \u2014 many of which it has long rejected. In fact, it has dug in. That has left Trump\u2019s stated top objectives unrealized: Iran has yet to agree to abandon <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-nuclear-uranium-grossi-iaea-isfahan-trump-be1e70b842638e69efeb07417bf78d41\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">its nuclear program<\/a> or its ballistic missile development, or cease support for its proxies in the region, including those in Gaza, Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The White House on Monday defended the president&#8217;s approach, saying, \u201cTrump&#8217;s preference is always peace and diplomacy\u201d but he will only accept a deal that puts America first. \u201cPresident Trump holds all the cards and wisely keeps all options on the table to ensure that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon,\u201d spokesperson Olivia Wales said in a statement to The Associated Press. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Iran has leverage with the Strait of Hormuz<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Crucially, Iran still has a chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz, the vital shipping lane for global oil supplies, even as the U.S. military has enforced its own blockade on Iranian ports. The <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-us-war-strait-hormuz-fuel-price-economy-numbers-408faf6d6fb1c0aa104d059257204f52\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wild shifts in the global energy market<\/a> that followed have <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/gasoline-oil-war-iran-strait-of-hormuz-0e5b61be4a4c8a8a077ed5ff6f84c0ce\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">raised gasoline prices<\/a>, hurting U.S. consumers and causing potential problems for Trump&#8217;s Republican Party ahead of congressional midterm elections in November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Trump&#8217;s playbook of turning up the pressure \u2014 economically and militarily \u2014 to bend foreign governments to his will is not playing out in Iran as it has in Venezuela, Cuba and elsewhere. <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cuba-blackout-energy-crisis-oil-embargo-5450e7802d2df142120ef4049fe500ac\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oil blockades have squeezed those two countries<\/a> and the Trump administration quickly <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/venezuela-us-maduro-what-to-know-a57528ff315a7f70ed51a1721f5e0bc2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ousted Venezuelan leader Nicol\u00e1s Maduro<\/a>, but they do not hold a bargaining chip as effective as Iran&#8217;s control over the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">With the Iran war driving up costs for Americans, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-approval-iran-economy-cost-of-living-poll-fff492898cc8ff34e11df90ec4837a79\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump\u2019s approval rating on the economy has slumped<\/a>, according to an AP-NORC poll conducted last month, with even Republicans showing less faith in his leadership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">For all of Trump\u2019s rhetoric, Iran has been unwilling to accept limitations on any of its policies that amount to more than what it conceded during the negotiations for a nuclear deal with world powers during the Obama administration. Trump called it the \u201cworst ever\u201d agreement negotiated by the U.S. and pulled out of it in his first term in 2018.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Since a fragile truce in the war went into effect last month, Trump has lashed out over the slow pace of negotiations to reach a permanent deal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cFor Iran, the Clock is Ticking, and they better get moving, FAST, or there won\u2019t be anything left of them,\u201d Trump posted on social media Sunday shortly after a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The Iranian response was quick. \u201cOur armed forces\u2019 fingers are on the trigger, while diplomacy is also continuing,\u201d Mohsen Rezaei, a military adviser to Iran\u2019s supreme leader, said on state television.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Neither side sees defeat, expert says<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Ali Vaez, Iran director at the International Crisis Group who has watched years of fruitless diplomacy between Washington and Tehran, said the longtime adversaries do not see themselves as being defeated by the latest conflict.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cSince the ceasefire took effect, both Washington and Tehran seem to be working on the assumption that time acts in their favor: Each believes that the blockade and counter-blockade in the Strait of Hormuz raises the costs for the other side, while giving a reprieve to prepare for a potential resumption of hostilities,\u201d Vaez said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Despite the impact of America&#8217;s economic pressure campaign, Iranian officials have not reached the pain threshold \u201cto the point of accepting what it perceives as capitulatory demands,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">David Schenker, a former assistant secretary of state for the Middle East in Trump\u2019s first administration who is currently at The Washington Institute for Near East Policy, described the current situation as \u201ca stalemate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">He said Trump likely has \u201cmisgivings\u201d about returning to full-on military conflict, especially because of Gulf Arab anxieties about Iranian retaliation and the volatility in the energy markets, with its political implications in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Rich Goldberg, an Iran hawk and former National Security Council official in both of Trump\u2019s administrations who is now with the Foundation for Defense of Democracies think tank, insisted that Trump is still operating from a position of strength, including with the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Goldberg, who has a special interest in American energy dominance, said that while reopening the strait would ease the \u201cpain at the pump\u201d felt by many Americans, it was not critical. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThe short-term pain at the pump is distracting people from U.S. overall energy dominance,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is not a permanent crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 The Associated Press.
