They are <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-world-cup-fifa-infantino-6e30afd95cc0db3213afdadd54d2b94b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">preparing to play<\/a> three group-stage games, at Inglewood, California and Seattle.<\/p>\n<p>Azmoun, who played at the last two World Cups, has not been selected since posting a photograph on social media in March that angered Iranian authorities during the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/iran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">war<\/a> with the U.S. and Israel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWishing you all the best, guys,\u201d Azmoun wrote in Farsi on his Instagram account that has 5.8 million followers. \u201cIt\u2019s true that I\u2019m not there with you, but you are my friends and there is no reason not to wish you success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 31-year-old Azmoun is a great in Iranian soccer with 57 career goals in 91 appearances.<\/p>\n<p>Azmoun now plays in Dubai for the Shabab Al-Ahli club. In March he posted a photo, later deleted, of himself with the emirate\u2019s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.<\/p>\n<p>The United Arab Emirates has normalized diplomatic relations with Israel since 2020, and has been targeted by Iranian drones in the regional conflict that started on Feb. 28.<\/p>\n<p>Azmoun wrote Tuesday that: \u201cA lot of people are trying to bring me down, but these things being said aren\u2019t true at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Soccer base in Turkey<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s home-based players had no competitive games since February because the national league shut down during the war.<\/p>\n<p>They have returned to Turkish coastal resort Antalya where in March they played two warmup games and also <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-soccer-protest-children-worldcup-b388f211a8f4ca93a6a82a108cfe3e7b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">met FIFA president Gianni Infantino<\/a> to talk about the logistical and political challenges of entering and playing games in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>A follow-up meeting Saturday between Iranian soccer leaders and FIFA officials in Istanbul did not lead to any guarantees being announced about getting visas to enter the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-visas-travel-ban-world-cup-olympics-869bace5a2eb40b7f1aac1e6b8667474\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">administration promised in January<\/a> to give athletes and coaches visiting for major sporting events an exemption from travel bans, but not other officials.<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s delegation is expected to arrive between June 5-10 at a training base in Tucson, Arizona.<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s World Cup games<\/p>\n<p>The team\u2019s opening game is June 15 against New Zealand at the Los Angeles Rams\u2019 stadium, where it also plays Belgium. Iran finishes group play against Egypt on June 26 in Seattle amid the city\u2019s official celebration of LGBTQ+ Pride. Both the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/world-cup-seattle-egypt-iran-lgbtq-pride-4372288ea3c4465fd985e686a6cccf3c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iranian and Egyptian soccer federations have objected<\/a> to the plans.<\/p>\n<p>Iranian soccer officials also want FIFA to ban flags dating before the Islamic Revolution in 1979 from stadiums where the team plays.
