US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Friday that there has been \u201csome slight progress\u201d regarding negotiations over Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, cautioning against overstating the development.<\/p>\n
Iran\u2019s tolling system plan rejected<\/p>\n
\u201cThere’s been some slight progress, I don’t want to exaggerate it, but there’s been a little bit of movement, and that’s good,\u201d Rubio told reporters ahead of a NATO foreign ministers meeting alongside Secretary General Mark Rutte. He said the \u201cfundamentals remain the same,\u201d adding: \u201cIran can never have nuclear weapons, it just cannot make them.\u201d Rubio accused Tehran of attempting to establish a \u201ctolling system\u201d in the Strait of Hormuz and trying to persuade Oman to join the initiative. \u201cThere is not a country in the world that should accept that,\u201d he said, calling the idea \u201cnot acceptable.\u201d He warned that if such a system were allowed in Hormuz, it would spread to other strategic waterways.<\/p>\n
UN resolution and NATO concerns<\/p>\n
Rubio said Washington is working through the UN on a Bahrain-sponsored resolution and criticized unnamed Security Council members considering a veto. \u201cLet’s see if the United Nations still works,\u201d he said.
