{"id":12865,"date":"2026-03-10T15:33:17","date_gmt":"2026-03-10T15:33:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/12865\/"},"modified":"2026-03-10T15:33:17","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T15:33:17","slug":"australian-submariners-have-a-brush-with-iran-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/12865\/","title":{"rendered":"Australian submariners have a brush with Iran war"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand \u2014 On March 4, when a U.S. Navy submarine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2026\/03\/04\/us-submarine-sinks-iranian-ship-in-first-torpedo-kill-since-wwii-pentagon-confirms\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2026\/03\/04\/us-submarine-sinks-iranian-ship-in-first-torpedo-kill-since-wwii-pentagon-confirms\/\">torpedoed an enemy combatant<\/a> for the first time since World War II, three Australian submariners were aboard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">This was a contentious point for Canberra, as it is not a party to military actions against Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Two days later, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed the presence of Royal Australian Navy (RAN) sailors aboard the U.S. submarine when the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena was sunk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cWe wouldn\u2019t normally confirm such an issue, but given our meetings and the public interest, I can confirm that there were three Australian personnel on board that vessel,\u201d Albanese revealed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">He added, \u201cI can confirm also, though, that no Australian personnel have participated in any offensive action against Iran.\u201d He noted, too, frameworks are in place to ensure Australians do not participate in such combat actions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Albanese elaborated: \u201cThese are long-standing, third-country arrangements that have been in place for a long period of time, and what they do is ensure that Australian Defence Force personnel, where they are embedded in third countries\u2019 defense assets, they act in accordance with Australian law, Australian policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Jennifer Parker, principal and founder of Barrier Strategic Advisory, told Defense News it would have been possible for Australian submariners to recuse themselves during the attack off Sri Lanka. \u201cIt would be quite straightforward to not be on the consoles or in the control room during the engagements,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cAs to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2026\/03\/09\/us-iran-spar-over-status-of-iranian-warship-sunk-by-submarine\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2026\/03\/09\/us-iran-spar-over-status-of-iranian-warship-sunk-by-submarine\/\">legality<\/a>, this was a lawful target in accordance with the law of naval warfare, and the response was also consistent with international law,\u201d Parker said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">She added that such attacks can legally occur anywhere outside 12-nautical-mile territorial waters of neutral states, something true of the U.S. attack near Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">David Shoebridge, a senator from the opposition Greens party, alleged that Australia was complicit in an illegal war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re being dragged into these wars because of the dystopian logic of AUKUS, that we\u2019re somehow safer by being part of an alliance led by Donald Trump and his lawless regime,\u201d he said, referring to the U.S. president.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">AUKUS is a trilateral pact between Australia, the U.K. and the United States aimed at outfitting Australia with nuclear-powered submarines and other technology that would allow Canberra to hold China at bay in Asian waters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Parker wrote in a piece for The Academic website, \u201cUnder the law of naval warfare, warships belonging to a state engaged in an international armed conflict are military objectives by nature. The rules say they may be lawfully targeted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">As per normal practice, the U.S. did not name the submarine involved, but there are suggestions it was the Virginia-class boat USS Minnesota, which rotated through Australia\u2019s submarine base near Perth last year.<\/p>\n<p>AUKUS progress<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">As the Australian Navy ramps up preparations to receive second-hand U.S. Virginia-class submarines, dozens of its sailors have been rotating onto American nuclear-powered attack submarines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Last October, Australian officials revealed \u201cmore than 50\u201d sailors were at that time serving on American SSNs. Furthermore, Rear Adm. Stephen Hughes, Australia\u2019s Head of Navy Capability, told Defense News last November that about 160-200 Australian sailors were then in the U.S. and U.K. training pipelines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cAUKUS remains on track, with a significant amount of achievements to date,\u201d said Parker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Hughes said it is \u201ca really complicated equation\u201d training sailors on SSNs, even while the Australian Navy keeps six conventionally powered Collins-class submarines in service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not hard because we can\u2019t do it and we don\u2019t understand it, but you\u2019ve got to keep Collins at its peak performance while you\u2019re bringing in a new apex predator,\u201d he said. \u201cSo the balance here is obviously across the industry spectrum, it\u2019s across navy workforce, getting them trained and still having enough Collins submarines while you\u2019re trying to build a workforce for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__BioWrapper-sc-cy7r53-0 eATlTY a-body2\">Gordon Arthur is an Asia correspondent for Defense News.
