Senate Republicans cast doubt on the viability of a potential peace deal between the United States and Iran over the weekend as President Trump doubled down in support of his administration\u2019s negotiations to end the nearly three-month-old war.<\/p>\n

U.S. and Iranian officials have described an emerging framework that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz and in which, U.S. officials say, Iran would commit to disposing of its highly enriched uranium. Iranian officials have also said that nuclear matters would be negotiated within 30 to 60 days.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt doesn\u2019t make too much sense to me,\u201d Senator Thom Tillis, Republican of North Carolina, said Sunday on CNN\u2019s \u201cState of the Union.\u201d Mr. Tillis called the Iranians\u2019 commitment to reopening the Strait of Hormuz \u201cquestionable\u201d without a finalized peace deal, adding that \u201cthere are a lot of things that need to be explained.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Saturday, Senator Roger Wicker, the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, wrote on social media<\/a> that a \u201c60-day ceasefire \u2014 with the belief that Iran will ever engage in good faith \u2014 would be a disaster.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump shot back on social media on Sunday afternoon, calling any deal he would negotiate \u201cgood and proper\u201d and saying that such criticism was coming from \u201closers, who are critical about something they know nothing about.\u201d He had announced on Saturday that the United States and Iran \u201clargely negotiated\u201d an agreement to end the war.<\/p>\n

But even some of the president\u2019s closest allies have expressed misgivings. Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina, wrote on social media on Saturday that striking a peace deal now would fuel the perception that the United States was recognizing Iran as a dominant force \u201crequiring a diplomatic solution,\u201d calling such an outcome \u201ca nightmare for Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt makes one wonder why the war started to begin with,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Senator Ted Cruz, Republican of Texas, said he was \u201cdeeply concerned\u201d about the prospective deal, calling any outcome in which Iran retained control of the Strait of Hormuz and the ability to enrich uranium \u201ca disastrous mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some Republicans, however, including Speaker Mike Johnson, still voiced support for a deal and cautioned against making a quick judgment before its official terms were released.<\/p>\n

Mr. Johnson said Sunday on \u201cFox & Friends Weekend\u201d that he was \u201cconfident\u201d that the deal would \u201ctake care of the nuclear dust\u201d (Mr. Trump\u2019s term<\/a> for Iran\u2019s stockpile of enriched uranium) and praised the president for his \u201cresolute\u201d will to curb Iran\u2019s nuclear ambitions.<\/p>\n

Senator Rand Paul, Republican of Kentucky and a frequent critic of Mr. Trump\u2019s policies, encouraged patience from other critics of the administration, saying on social media on Sunday that they \u201cshould give President Trump the space to find an American first solution.\u201d<\/p>\n

Senate Democrats, for their part, also joined in with critiques on Sunday. Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey said on CNN that the president was \u201cbeing played as a fool,\u201d while Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland called the emerging framework \u201ca return to the prewar status quo.\u201d<\/p>\n
