{"id":130380,"date":"2026-05-25T15:30:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-25T15:30:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/130380\/"},"modified":"2026-05-25T15:30:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-25T15:30:13","slug":"u-s-sees-progress-in-iran-talks-tehran-says-no-deal-yet-national-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/130380\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. sees progress in Iran talks, Tehran says no deal yet | National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(The Center Square)\u00a0\u2013 A top Iranian official says a deal to end the conflict between the U.S. and Iran is not imminent, despite earlier suggestions from U.S. officials that an agreement could come as soon as Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The comments come after reports surfaced that negotiators were nearing a breakthrough as talks continued over a potential ceasefire extension and an end to the blockade at the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p>Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqai said Monday that, while negotiators have made progress, no final agreement has been reached.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is correct to say that we have reached a conclusion on a large portion of the issues under discussion,&#8221; Baqai said in Tehran on Monday. &#8220;But to say that this means the signing of an agreement is imminent \u2013\u00a0no one can make such a claim.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His remarks came after Secretary of State Marco Rubio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/releases\/office-of-the-spokesperson\/2026\/05\/secretary-of-state-marco-rubio-remarks-to-the-press-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told reporters<\/a> in Delhi on Monday that a &#8220;pretty solid&#8221; proposal is on the table.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We thought we might have some news last night, maybe today,&#8221; Rubio said. &#8220;I wouldn\u2019t read too much into it. Takes a little while to get back.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rubio said U.S. officials are not in a hurry to make a deal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The president said he\u2019s not in a hurry,&#8221; Rubio said. &#8220;He\u2019s not going to make a bad deal, and the president&#8217;s not going to make a bad agreement. So let&#8217;s see what happens. We&#8217;re going to give diplomacy every chance to succeed before we explore the alternatives.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>                    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moorenews.com\/news\/national\/why-do-we-say-ok\/article_c7285291-4d10-5cf9-8715-36ad42ee8b1c.html\" class=\"tnt-asset-link\" aria-label=\"Why do we say &#x2018;OK&#x2019;?\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>                &#13;<br \/>\n                        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAQAAAADCAQAAAAe\/WZNAAAAEElEQVR42mM8U88ABowYDABAxQPltt5zqAAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==\" alt=\"Why do we say &#x2018;OK&#x2019;?\" class=\"img-responsive lazyload full default\" width=\"933\" height=\"700\" data- data-\/><br \/>\n                <\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of the likely hangups with negotiations remains the Trump administration&#8217;s insistence that Iran cannot be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last week, President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/national\/article_f54797fc-5cf0-4f24-9346-ba9e3801c86b.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told The Center Square<\/a> the U.S. would secure that outcome &#8220;one way or the other.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon,&#8221; Trump said from the Oval Office on Thursday. &#8220;That\u2019s more important than anything else.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Trump made the comments after The Center Square asked for clarification on Vice President JD Vance\u2019s earlier statements about uncertainty around a future deal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not sometimes totally clear what the negotiating position of the team is, and I don&#8217;t know if that&#8217;s sometimes bad communication, if that&#8217;s bad faith,&#8221; Vance said last Tuesday. &#8220;It&#8217;s sometimes hard to figure out exactly what it is that the Iranians want to accomplish out of the negotiation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The conflict with Iran first broke out 86 days ago, on February 28.
